Hello AppleVis community,

I am planning to purchase a Braille display for use with my Mac. I primarily will be using it for my college education. Are there any advantages between one Braille display model and another? For example, focus vs. brailleyint. Could anyone share any advantages/disadvantages that one Braille display has over the other. Is there any reason I should Favor one over the other?

Thank you in advance!

Hi,

Has anyone used google docs with their Braille Display in safari? Just pasted the contents of a document that I wrote in MS Word and the braille output is unintelligible.

Hello everyone. Sometimes I get this weird issue on my iPhone 8 plus where my braille display keeps typing capital letters and I have no other way of stopping it except restarting my phone. Caps lock is not on on the virtual keyboard. Is there a command for the braille display for caps lock? This is a smart beetle display bTW. I consider myself very techy but this issue I have not been able to track down. Thank you all so much.

Hello AppleVis,
I had a question about using a braille display with a transcribing set up.
Have any of you done this? I own a Focus40.
I figured when transcribing. I'd play the audio bak and read over the transcription before submitting.
just wanted to ask. I'd imagine it's possible with that Express Scribe software I was told about in another forum.
Thanks in advance.

Hi everyone. I was wondering why a braille display does not read numbers when your are editing a document, such as in pages or word. I'm using a Braillenote Apex with the latest software of both the iDevice and the Apex. Is anyone having this issue and can onyone help? Thank you.

I am shopping for a new braille display. I have had Alvas since the mid-90's. Not only am I looking for something that I can use for work with my laptop, but also to connect via Bluetooth with my iPhone. I am hoping to find something with 40 cells, with touch cursors, and a display that has quick response time, as I am a fast braille reader. A braille keyboard is an interesting concept, but not a must, as I've never had the option of braille input on my displays before. If anyone here would be willing to tell me what they're using and the pros and cons, that would be greatly appreciated.

I am wondering if there are any 40 cell Braille displays that work on Apple and don’t need a PC to upgrade the firmware?
Thank you!

Good afternoon. i have an iPhone 4s and am exploring my options for a Braille display. I would like the pros and cons of using the brailleNote Apex, Braille sense OnHand, braille Sense U2, and the new focus 40 blue. Is there a device that works better with an iPhone and other i devices? Thank you.

Hi, Being new to refreshable braille displays and iOS, I have just started to try and use orbit reader with PDF files and Apple Books. Is there a quick way of getting to a specific page, for instance from page 1 to 94, or getting from one chapter to another in either Apple Books or PDF files. Many thanks

Hello all, I use a Refreshabraille 18 and switch off from reading with the display and listening to VO do the reading. I generally have not had any issues; however, certain apps tend to present some challenges. For example, I use Lire as my RSS reader and when I begin to read an article the Braille will become sluggish. Sluggish in that panning etc. takes several seconds for the display to update. Now Lire is not the only app I have seen this behavior with and there is another app called News Free which is an RSS app and it presents the same challenges.

Hi all,

This topic has probably been done and overdone in this space. I understand that Apple keeps promising improved Braille support after it went down with the introduction of IOS 8. But I am still experiencing difficulties. I work with both an iPhone 6 and an iPad, and with both devices my Braille display freezes altogether or freezes but puts in one letter repeatedly before getting stuck. I have a Focus 40 and a Braille Note Apex. I test aps as a part of my job and find this disruptive. Any suggestions? Is there anything I can do here?

Hi all,
So I have a question that I'm hoping you can answer. It's not a technical braille question, rather a lifestyle one.

Hi all,
My school has just bought a Refreshabraille to use with my iPad, but I've heard a lot of bad things about it and want to get one for home. I need a small braille display (no notetaking capabilities built in), that can be paired with my iPhone and iPad. Also what are your experiences with the Refreshabraille? Thanks all.

Hello, I am wondering if there is a way to remove the symbol that is found at the start of every new line in kindle and books for iPhone. Every time I scroll to the next line of braille there is a dots 1, 3, 6, 7 and 8 symbol followed by a space at the beginning of each line. This really annoys me cause I only have 20 cells to work with and 2 of those are taken up by useless symbols. Please if anyone has a work around for this please let me know. Thanks in advance

Braille users on iPadOS 15.2, there is an issue that I can confirm it happens on my devices; iPad Pro, iPad Mini, Brailliant BI14, RB18 and Focus Blue 40. No matter what combination I have, any braille display connected to any of my iDevices will freeze randomly. This is only resolved when I switch off braille alert message fully.

Hello. Please, I would like to ask you for help. I like screen braille input on Apple devices, but blind people from Slovakia cannot use it properly because there is no way to type some accented characters Slovak language has.
I got in touch with Apple accessibility team two years ago and they said they would fix it, but nothing has been done about it by now.
Is there any other way how to make them listen and get it fixed?
People who use other languages (not English), how does braille imput work for you?
Thank you very much for all your suggestions and ideas.

The issue i describe popped up after writing a message in WhatsApp. I love the braille input mode in IOS8, however when i move with the rotor into braille input mode now, voiceover crashes whenever the IPhone is tilted. Braille input works in table mode without problems, but as soon as the switch is made with tilting the IPhone, VO restarts. I tried to tackle this issue, and I only managed to do this by entirely resetting my IPhone and setting it up as a new one. Thus, even restoring al settings and keeping the data doesn't work.
