hi. was wondering, can I develop for the iphone, ipad, using windows 7 or 8. if so, as I do not have any devices. so. was wondering, can I use some thing, like x code for windows, as I have never used voice over, or owned a device. going to enroll in a programming course, and they do mobile development, android and ios. so, maybe some thing like visual studio, eclipse, could help me out. is this possible. if I need to learn voice over, and for the ipad, iphone, are there audio demos, I can listen to. thanks. marvin.
Hi all,
So I've recently become interested in developping apps, but as a blind person who uses VoiceOver, I just wanted to get some expert opinions before starting.
Firstly, is it possible to develop an app using VoiceOver alone?
Whats the most accessible way to go about it?
Has anyone used dictation to enter code in Xcode? It seems to work, more or less, but entering source code syntax seems to be beyond it. Is there some trick to doing this, or is it not up to the task?
It claims to be able to provide Kokoro system voices to the Mac. Further as the developer seems to be uninterested in having Apple membership and provide signed installers, it likely makes him uninterested in iOS where this should work with little or no modifications (if it works on the Mac).
Ever wanted to build your own app to use UPC data? At least a couple of people in this group have asked us about using our database and this is now possible.
We've just released a new Applications Program Interface (API) that enables app and website developers to submit a UPC or EAN code and to obtain information for more than 37,000,000 common items. Information is available in 10 languages.
The proprietary database has been created for Digit-Eyes, a popular iPhone/iPod app used by unsighted people to obtain product information.
Ugh. I feel like the language is not ready for mainstream use. My code is constantly breaking. Not only that... the syntax looks like garbage. Why does everyone like Swift? I <3 Objective C for life
I got it in my head to try swift playgrounds. What am i getting into? can anyone point me in the direction of others who use it to talk and possibly help along the way? I haven't opened it. No sure I wanna. lmao
I'm the developer for Dream Quest (https://itunes.apple.com/us/app/dream-quest/id870227884?mt=8) and I was referred here in an attempt to make the UI actually accessible. On the downside, the Unity engine seems to have basically no accessibility support. On the upside, I didn't use the Unity interface and wrote my own, so there's a fair amount of freedom in what I can do.
Hi all. I just received this and was asked to share it here. Apologies in advance if this is in the wrong forum. This is from the folks at GeeksModo, and was posted by a fellow AppleVis user. I'm not a coder, but I might at some point take it up time permitting. https://geeksmodo.com/a-brighter-apple-xcode-on-ios-14/
Several of you have been writing to the Maverick software company about their apps such as Cupcakes! and More Salad. I received a very promising note from Glenda, the woman from Maverick Software I have been writing to for a couple of weeks. Here's what she wrote just a few days ago:
Beginning of note:
Good news, we did a bunch of work the last couple days and expanded & tweaked the Voice Over functions of Cupcakes!. We went through every screen, made sure anything you interacted with is tagged with the proper label.
Hi,
I'm testing accessibility on a mobile device and I have conflicting points of view... can you guys please help me by advising what expected behaviour would be?
When changing screens in a mobile device, say if you're scanning a barcode and then going to the product page... would you expect a mobile app to read all the screens between the scan screen and the product page?
eg.
1. User has scanned barcode
2. App says "barcode scan, main menu, search, text, Main Menu" and then starts reading out the product detail.

I'm the developer of the hex editor Synalyze It! ( https://www.synalysis.net/ ) and would like to make it accessible in the best possible way.
However, as I'm not very experienced with VoiceOver and the like, I need some feedback and input in order to make it right.
There are several open questions for me what to return in which situations. For example, it probably doesn't make sense to return the full content of a larger selection in the hex editor.
Hello all!
Several weeks back I posted an inquiry asking for volunteers who might want to help in a Focus Group and Beta Testing for iPhone apps that are targeted specifically for low-vision and blind users. The response was quite healthy. Thanks to all who responded.
I created a forum for these discussions on Yahoo. However, during the process, we found that the polls on Yahoo to be not very accessible. Also, only a small subset of those expressing intreats logged int to participate.
We've been using bitrise.io to automate build of our iOS app "1Timer - Voice Timer". It has made our life so much easier.
It's free and very easy to start. The free accounts have a 10-minute build limit caps at 200 build per month, but it's enough for indie developers. If you are interested, start by clicking on the link below.
I've been trying my hand at a bit of vibe coding. it's pretty good fun. I've am having a problem with getting my iPhone into developer mode though. I read this problem was noted elsewhere, but I didn't understand the response.
I can switch it into developer mode, but when my phone restarts there is no audio or even haptic feedback. I know it's on as it has appeared in the side bar of finder.
Hello,
I know many people are wanting to learn to make apps. An amazing way to do this is in swift using SwiftUI. There is a free course starting tomorrow at 7:00 central that I registered for. It is taught by Michael Doise a blind programmer. Everything is fully accessible for everyone. If you can't make it, you can listen on demand. Please let me know if you have questions. https://www.techopolis.courses/courses/swiftui-basics
I have some questions regarding a game I'm developing and am hoping for some input.
This is my first post, but I have been reading this forum silently for months, and find that the people here give really helpful answers to the questions posted by developers.
The fourth annual Games for Blind Gamers jam starts on February 1st. Participants will have until February 28th to submit a game on itch.io. There is a $100 prize for the winning game as determined by the judges.
Hello friends,
I am working on a gesture based keyboard app called Gestype (http://www.gestype.com) which allows anyone to type fast on touchscreen devices, irrespective of their visual ability.
I am trying to make the app work with voiceover and running into issues with making swipes and taps work with voiceover.
Specifically, say, I have one big label. Right swiping, anywhere on that label results in typing the alphabet "a".
However, when I turn voiceover on, the swipe function is lost.
