Hi all,

I am looking for volunteers to test and report on the accessibility of a couple of apps.

The 2 apps are:

Group Email!: www.redbits.com/iphone/groupemail
Group Text!: www.redbits.com/iphone/grouptext

The developer of these apps has recently undertaken work to improve their accessibility, and is keen to gain some feedback from VoiceOver users.

Hi everyone,
I'm a blind developer and I use VoiceOver exclusively. I build my own apps and I'm trying to enroll in the Apple Developer Program as an individual so I can publish on the App Store.

I have heard from a few people that electronic appliances are hard to use as a blind person. Is this something people any of you encounter? How often do you encounter this? What specifically is challenging? How do you get around this problem? Are there any apps that successfully address these challenges?

I'm starting out doing some accessibility development. I noticed this, if I have a div set like this:
role="status" aria-live="polite" aria-atomic="false"
If I put some text in there and it is reading it, and I append more text before the reader has finished, it stops where it is at and just reads the new text. I'd like it to finish reading what it was doing and then read the additional text I appended to the field.
I tried dynamically creating a new aria-live="polite" element, but it did the same thing.

Hi,

We had some helpful AppleVis members assist us in refining the VoiceOver experience in our app Soundproof over recent weeks.

I wrote an article about this explaining how we treated some of the custom UI elements and interactions to make it as good as we could. It might be useful to some of you:

Hello applevis,
Is it just me or whenever we write code in xcode we get autocompletion suggestions in a full blown up popup with voiceover, with all the noise it implies? Like it's brutal. Any way to change this?
Also I looked at online but the threads about this seem outdated, except the .rtf file can we still get a plain text .txt or whatever extension from within xcode when creating a new file? Like... I can always remove the rtf1 thing manually but... that doesn't seem to be particularly elegant.?
Thanks so much!

Hi all!
I am from Russia, we have an unpredictable economic situation now, so I decided to retrain as an iOS application developer, such a profession gives much more independence and freedom.
I myself am a lawyer by education.
When I worked as a lawyer, my main working device was only an iPad Pro 12.9 2021, I don’t have a MacBook.
They say that now many applications can be developed using Swift playgrounds 4 on the iPad Pro.
Can you please tell me how true this is? Or is it impossible to do without buying a MacBook and a full-fledged Xcode?

Hi AppleVis users!

I'm developing an ePub/PDF reader for iOS. One problem I'm trying to solve is how best to arrange voiceover elements. Since my app will be presenting lots of long-form content (books), I want to ensure that both the contents of the actual book (images, links, text) can be easily accessed, as well as the controls (settings, book navigation, etc.).

Hello Applevis,
I am looking for latest up to date accessibility info for, if possible, the most accessible text editor for coding on mac aside xcode which is a glorified and overkilled ide for simple python executed via terminal (at least in my opinion).
I've heard about TextMate and decided to give it a try. At the beginning it seemed very promissing and I really liked how it was so close to what I am used on windows with notepad++, very lightweight and accessible.

Hi everyone,

I’m working on VoiceOver support for a screen where users can choose from multiple configuration options—for example, selecting a color from a list like Green, Red, and Blue.

I’d love your input on the best way to announce these options with VoiceOver.

If Blue is the default selected color, which of the following approaches would offer better clarity for VoiceOver users?
1. “Green, button”, “Red, button”, “selected, Blue, button”
or
2. “Green”, “Red”, “selected, Blue”

Hi all,

I heard that Applevis was looking for Beta Testers. I'm unsure if I'm in the right forum to add my name to the list, but I'd love to be a beta tester. Can someone point me in the right direction? Thank you for any assistance you can provide. Have a wonderful day! Musically,

Allison

Hi all,

I'm looking for some accessibility users to take part in a beta test of my upcoming app as I'd like to make sure the app is accessible before it goes live.

The app is in the personal finance category—it's a digital implementation of the envelope budgeting paradigm—so really my target audience is anyone that manages their own finances. I have done extensive VoiceOver testing during development but I'd like to be inclusive to all accessibility users, so I'm not necessarily only looking for VoiceOver users to take part in the beta.

Hello applevis users,

We're looking for people with any kind of low vision, who are willing to support us in developing a new feature for visor - low vision magnifier for iPhone, iPad & iPod touch.

Hi everyone,

I'm Ashley, the blind developer behind Open Independence, and I'd like to invite you to beta test Score Reader, my accessible sheet-music reader for iPhone.

The problem it tackles: printed and digital sheet music is almost entirely visual, so blind and low-vision musicians usually can't read a score independently - you wait for someone to transcribe or describe it. Score Reader imports MusicXML and compressed MXL files (plus simple PDF scores) and lets you move through the music with VoiceOver and listen to what's on the page.

Hey everyone. I’m a completely-blind developer picking-up Swift as a second language. I have a solid grasp on XCode at this point, and have made two simple SwiftUI projects. However, tracking-down errors seems overly-cumbersome/incomplete with Voiceover, so I must be missing something. Secondly, I have yet to figure-out how to actually navigate my project in the Preview group or the XCode Simulator, and Apple doesn’t seem to have any documentation on navigating those areas with Voiceover.

First, here’s what I’m running-into when tracking-down errors:

Hello World! It has been 74 days since I bought my 1st iPhone, the iPhone 6S+, new from an Apple authorized reseller, locally here in the Philippines, and I have begun software development without any assistance from Apple’s accessibility team nor their support staff. I am totally blind, but with the brain of a computer scientist!
For the record, my iPhone 6S+ is running iOS 12.3.1. It is paired & connected to my LogicTech Bluetooth QWERTY keyboard. And I’m using VoiceOver since the 5 minutes before making the purchase with my sighted wife.

Hi all, I am an iOS developer with an idea for several apps targeted toward low-vision/blind users. However, I need to get some marketing research to back-up the viability of these apps for the powers that be. Does anyone know of marketing research that has been performed about the adoption rate of iOS devices by the LV community? I have anecdotal evidence, but would need market-wide numbers to sell the concepts. Also, would anyone here be interested in participating in focus group/beta testing of apps specifically for LV/Blind users? Thanks, Ben

Hello everyone,
Does anyone have a book they can recommend for learning swift on bookshare? I tried using iBooks on my Mac but it does not work very well. I tried reading Apples book on Swift but I was unable to effectively read it with iBooks. I could not figure out how to move character by character which is essential for reading a book on programming.

My name is Doug Russell and I am a developer at Bottle Rocket Apps (http://www.bottlerocketapps.com/) We are primarily an iOS shop and are currently at work establishing a baseline for best practices in supporting accessibility. We have a solid bead on what features the platform supports but are seeking input from actual users as to their experiences using our and other apps.

Hello everyone!
I’m starting a 14-day micro-coding challenge using SwiftUI and Xcode with VoiceOver on Mac. My main goal is to spend 15 to 30 minutes each day building a VoiceOver-accessible Focus Timer App and sharing my progress daily for accountability.
I wanted to log my journey here in the AppleVis community to stay consistent, connect with other blind/VI developers, and learn best practices for accessible app design.
