Apple Releases iOS 16.1 and iPadOS 16.1; Bringing Many Fixes for VoiceOver Users

By AppleVis, 24 October, 2022

Member of the AppleVis Editorial Team

Apple has today released iOS 16.1 and iPadOS 16.1 to the public. Our testing suggests that these releases resolve a number of the issues introduced for blind and low vision users with the initial release of iOS 16.

Our experience is that the following accessibility bugs have been resolved or significantly addressed in iOS 16.1 and iPadOS 16.1:

At the time of writing, we are aware of the following new bug:

When navigating a list of emails in a folder in the Mail app and previews are enabled, VoiceOver will on occasions speak the wrong preview. For example, you place VoiceOver focus on an email received from Bert. Instead of VoiceOver speaking the body of that email as the preview, it might instead speak the body of an email received from Ernie.

There appears to be no pattern to predict when this behavior will present itself or which email body will wrongly be spoken. In our experience, it's not been unusual for VoiceOver to speak the body of an email which isn't even in the same folder. For instance, speaking the body of an email that has previously been deleted. It's also been common for this behavior to be present on multiple emails at the same time.

When you double -tap on the email, the correct and expected email body is displayed and spoken by VoiceOver.

One change of note, is that Apple has made the shutdown chime available on all iPhone models, not just the iPhone 14 as was the case when this feature was first introduced. Note that the startup chime remains limited to the iPhone 14 models, as only these are capable of supporting this chime due to it needing to be hardcoded in to the iPhone's boot software.

As we always stress, we can make no claims on the completeness or accuracy of our testing. We are only a small team, and it is simply impossible for us to test all devices, configurations, applications, and use cases. Accordingly, to help us ensure that the information on this page is as complete and accurate as possible, please let us know in the comments of any additional fixes; enhancements; or regressions that you find in your own use of iOS 16.1 and iPadOS 16.1.

Are their any major bugs in new ipados release, or is it the same as the bugs on the iphon?

By Dawn šŸ‘©šŸ»ā€šŸ¦Æ on Saturday, November 5, 2022 - 18:08

Hello,
Forgive me for asking this question, but, I'm more nervous this year about upgrading than usual. Are there any Braille display bugs I should know about? Are there any bugs spicific to the Brailliant BI 40X that I should know about?
This is my first major OS release with a Braille display and I'm still getting the hang of things using it with my Ipad. So, I'm wanting to be more caucious. Plus, in my opinion, there's a huge difference between going from one version of 15 to the next, and going from 15 to 16. Especially with regards to this.
Also I'd be interested to know about any new Voiceover bugs for Ipad as well. Thank you in advance for any info!

This is strange! I'm now receiving a shutdown sound on the iPhone 12 Pro. I didn't get the sound in the release candidate, but when I removed the developer beta profile, and downloaded today's build the sound is there. Maybe we'll get a startup sound in the next update. We're already half way there. LOL

By Julian on Saturday, November 5, 2022 - 18:08

On my iPhone SE-3 I got the sound with the RC of 16.1.

By Matt on Saturday, November 5, 2022 - 18:08

I also just now saw it when I shut down my iPhone 11. I wonder why they didnā€™t add a start up sound? Like the previous poster said, weā€™re halfway there. Lol.

By Missy Hoppe on Saturday, November 5, 2022 - 18:08

Where do I enable this, or is it just automatic? currently updating my watch, so can't shut down the phone to experiment. Just thought of one more place to look for this feature in settings, so might check that out once I know my watch has safely updated. It's a real shame that we'll never get the start-up sound on older devices, but if it's a hardware limitation, I suppose I can understand. It's something I'll look forward to when/if I decide to get next year's iPhone 15. Right now, I'm still loving my 13 pro, though, and have no immediate plans to retire it.

By Earle on Saturday, November 5, 2022 - 18:08

You only get the shutdown sound if Voiceover is turned on. There is no setting like there is for the iPhone 14 series. Interesting stuff.

By Siobhan on Saturday, November 5, 2022 - 18:08

Just shut down after going to 16.1 and yep. maybe they'll give us the start up in 16.1.2 or somethin' like that.

By Lily Rose on Saturday, November 5, 2022 - 18:08

Startup sound might not be possible because it startup before ios actually starts. Shutdown is still just before ios turns off. I think that's why.

By Kelly Sapergia on Saturday, November 5, 2022 - 18:08

I just upgraded from iOS 15.7 to 16.1 on my iPhone X. This isn't a major bug for me, but while testing the new voices with Voiceover, I discovered that Vicki, at least at the time of this writing, doesn't work. Instead, I get Samantha's voice. I deleted and reinstalled Vicki with the same result. I believe most of the other voices I've tried work properly. Anyone else experiencing this?

By Herbie Allen on Saturday, November 5, 2022 - 18:08

With this update, when I go to select a message within the conversation table of the messages app, it will either select the conversation, or do nothing and when I un-interact, it tells me I have several conversations selected. I have not changed any VoiceOver settings and it worked just fine in Monterey, which tells me that something went screwy in my update.

By Siobhan on Saturday, November 5, 2022 - 18:08

I don't know if you'd have to feel what I'm talking about so i'll do my best to explain. I just updated from 15.7 and with 16.1 I noticed the keyboard doesn't respond as vigorously as it used to do. In fifteen, you could really feel the feedback and now, it's like an afterthought, you can notice it if you hold the phone a little tighter, but it's just not there. If anyone can make any sense of what I'm saying, maybe help explain in a much clearer way. Not a huge issue just something I didn't expect.

By Siobhan on Saturday, November 5, 2022 - 18:08

I didn't figure out how to delete the comment to ignore this one, please I posted twice by accident.

By Austin Grace on Saturday, November 5, 2022 - 18:08

Hello everyone. I just installed IOS 16.1 and the iPhone 11 has the power off sound but not power on. I was aware the power on sound was on the 14 series only. Also I'm not able to find a setting for the power off sound in accessibility. I don't mind the sound but was surprised the iPhone 11 played the sound. Did not know what devices had that feature. I'm loving the apple music focus bug with voiceover being fixed. It was super annoying.
Edit: had not noticed the above posts until now and noticed someone post about the shutdown sound on a 12 series, but wanted to post the 11 series info. Also was not aware that was a voiceover specific feature.

By Siobhan on Saturday, November 5, 2022 - 18:08

The lock sound doesn't play with voice over on, does when turned off. running a 12 with 16.1 and I have slightly figured out the haptic feedback issue. I didn't have the keyboard feedback turned on. Then, I noticed the feedback isn't there when you scroll pages, like one to two, three, etc. Again these are minimal but we'll see. Btw by scroll i mean horizonally, if you go virtaclly the feedback seems to be there. Odd.

By Sergey on Saturday, November 5, 2022 - 18:08

As a Braille display user I see the following issues that arrived with the release of iOS 16.0 and are still not fixed in 16.1.
1. In some edit fields when pressing dot 8 to insert a new line or send a message we get a pop menu with items such as Select, Select All and so on. You can dissmiss this menu but it is not possible to actually perform a desired action in this case.
2. In certain applications rotor actions are not shown in Braille although they are announced with speech.

So that is the reason that makes me to keep my iPad on 15.7.

By Pelle on Saturday, November 5, 2022 - 18:08

I updated from iOS 15.7 to iOS 16.1. Since the update, I have problems being able to enter edit mode in the passcode field. This especially happens when I'll enter the passcode after a restart of my phone. This can be solved by locking and unlocking the screen. However, immediately after the update the power button didn't respond (I have an iPhone SE 2020). This situation could be solved by entering the menu that is intended for an emergency situation, and going back to the main startup menu. The responsiveness of the power button got a little better over time, and worked normally after a restart.

Also worth mentioning, I personally find the intonation of the new human VoiceOver voices too chatty, which often breaks my flow.

By ming on Saturday, November 5, 2022 - 18:08

I found the power off sound is not on the speaker.
when I plug in my headset.
it also appear on the phone somewhere

By Dawn šŸ‘©šŸ»ā€šŸ¦Æ on Saturday, November 5, 2022 - 18:08

Oh! Thank you for telling me that! I'm glad I didn't update yet. Rotor actions not being announced in Braille and being announced in speech is a huge no-no for me to. Because more often than not, if I'm using Braille, I toggle speech off. Although the non-entering of new lines in some apps would be painful as well. Hope these 2 get fixed soon!

By Lily Rose on Saturday, November 5, 2022 - 18:08

In my experience this is a bug while staying in the preview while it downloads. To fix this, for any voice, don't stay in the preview.

By Lily Rose on Saturday, November 5, 2022 - 18:08

Yes, enter key still doesn't work, for me, and when I updated my iPad which is so used to being my paradise of not having to press the option key before the braille enter key, and this menu pops up. NOOOO! So that's a disappointment... So usually there's an enter key or a return key on the menu but then the menu the menu just kinda lingers there taking up full VO focus until I dismiss it. Also focus jumps within the menu making it particularly hard to press the dismiss button. I found in WhatsApp (not sure if any other app for this) I could press enter to send a message just fine and use the select commands, but that stopped. :( I do not know why any other apps do this and anyone know why? Regarding the rotor yes this happens to me too. Weird cause it's kinda hard to reproduce. Also still no editing commands using a braille displays (Select all, copy paste undo cut etc). Note that the ios16 bug list says it only happens on SE devices, but now, it seems it is reproduceable on ipads, too. Using an iPad Mini 5.

By Clare Page on Saturday, November 5, 2022 - 18:08

Hi! I have just updated my iPhone SE 2020 to IOS 16.1, and I found two bugs quite quickly. First of all, after entering my passcode correctly, VoiceOver didn't read the numbers on the key-pad for the SIM PIN until I restarted my phone, after which I could enter both my passcode and the PIN as normal. Unfortunately, once my phone was fully restarted, I found that the widgets I had added on my home screen are no longer readable with VoiceOver, even though the Weather and Calendar widgets on my lock screen still work. As for the shut-down sound, it doesn't bother me that everyone gets it in 16.1, I like it.

By Ann Marie B on Saturday, November 5, 2022 - 18:08

Hello,. I also have been experiencing the shutdown sound on my iPhone 12 and found it very interesting.

By Holger Fiallo on Saturday, November 5, 2022 - 18:08

Using 12 pro and iOS 16.1. Notice that when I get a notification, VO does not read it. I just says 2 time notification. Does not read anything be it news or message.

By Kelly Sapergia on Saturday, November 5, 2022 - 18:08

I tried using Vicki again later last night, and she now works fine with VO.

By mr grieves on Saturday, November 5, 2022 - 18:08

I might have just got lucky, but the app switcher bug I was experiencing since 16 may have been fixed. Prior to 16.1 I would have duplicate apps in the list, but some of them would be phantoms I couldn't properly interact with properly.

I've only had a quick play, but so far so good.

Still can't delete messages in the Mail app, but maybe I need to experiment a bit more.

By Lily Rose on Saturday, November 5, 2022 - 18:08

The back button on a contact is wrongly labeled. It is labeled Show Sidebar.

By Diana on Saturday, November 5, 2022 - 18:08

Hi everyone. Iā€™ve just updated to iOS 16.1 however, Iā€™m not seeing a lot of the promised voices. Havenā€™t seen any of the premium voices at all. Wondering if they are only offered to certain countries? I live in Zimbabwe

By Brooke on Saturday, November 5, 2022 - 18:08

When I first updated to iOS 16, I didn't see many of the voices either. I waited several hours, allowed my phone to charge, and when I checked again, they were there. Not sure if this will happen with you but thought it was worth mentioning.

By KE8UPE on Saturday, November 5, 2022 - 18:08

Hi,
I'm using an iphone 13 pro max, running ios 16.1.
I heard that customizing the lock screen has been made a little easier for us voiceover users in 16.1, so tried it out, & added some widgets.
The process worked well, but now, we have a major problem.
Voiceover isn't even acknowledgingtheir presence or lack thereof.
Has anyone else seen this?

Also, at random, I or the person I'm talking to, will hang up from a phone or facetime audio call, & I'll momentarily lose speech.
I've also noticed that my phone gets quite warm when on calls.
Are these behaviors normal or should I call Apple accessibility, & consider restoring?

By Diana on Saturday, November 5, 2022 - 18:08

Great, thank you so much for letting me know about the voices thing. I will wait and see if I get any new voices

By Lily Rose on Saturday, November 5, 2022 - 18:08

One bug solves another! Any one who uses a braille display with a certain iPhone or iPad model, knows that if you press enter key, on the display a popup menu comes up with commands like select, select all, etc. You also know the editing commands on the display do not work with the exception of selecting word by word (or character or line) and/or than using backspace to delete it! Now, although one is required to use the option command before any new line, if you press enterkey solo, you can select all. Another press and you can cut copy or look up (which is now known as search web). So let's say you cut the text. Go to the place you want to paste it, press the enter key, and find the paste button! Now we can still use editing commands on the fly! It sounds like something I could get used to before both these bugs are fixed.

By Sergey on Saturday, November 5, 2022 - 18:08

Thanks a lot to all of you who mentioned using option key emulation to make Enter key work as expected.
I just want to add that you can use any modifier key simulation to achieve this. SHIFT key works this way, just as an example.

By Clare Page on Saturday, November 5, 2022 - 18:08

Hi! I seem to remember that adding widgets to a lock screen creates a new lock screen, that might explain why new lock screen widgets aren't readable: However, as I write this, I can't remember how to change from one lock screen to another. As for my unreadable home screen widgets, I deleted them on Tuesday, then today I decided to try re-adding them: this time VoiceOver reads them correctly, so I don't know what went wrong with them when I first installed IOS 16.1.

By Lily Rose on Saturday, November 5, 2022 - 18:08

I went into Messages from Contacts today, and pressed message on a contact, sent a message, and got a notification from another person asking what I meant. Then, I noticed, for the first time that it looked like I was in that real message window. I figured it was simply VO being funky, so I tried again, only to find it was there with the proper conversation icon as well, and what I was typing in was what VO does when I have selected compose, without inputting a contact. I looked at the to field and VO spoke the name of a random contact, not even the one that I had messaged by accident. I was too late with the first message to undo it and pretend it hadn't happened, as the recipient already saw it, but I unsent the second message, and started over yet again. Same thing: same untitled message window, new random contact spoken in the to field, same recipient that I had sent several messages to in the last 30 days before they delete, thankfully so I could get that right info. This time I cancelled the message before I could mess up again. I initiated a new message from the Messages app to that person and it worked well! Is this bug known?

By Lily Rose on Saturday, November 5, 2022 - 18:08

Also, braille display panning commands are responding twice sometimes. Anyone seen this?

By Holger Fiallo on Saturday, November 5, 2022 - 18:08

In iOS 16.1, when I delete text that is jamk, message no longer ask to report it. Looks like apple remove the feature. Do people notice this? Using 12 pro.

By Shawn T on Saturday, November 5, 2022 - 18:08

When you delete a message from someone not in your contacts, there are now two buttons, delete conversation, and delete and report as junk. This is actually nicer because I found the extra popup annoying. So function hasn't been removed, simply moved.

OK. Thanks. What about on the lock screen VO just saying notification 2 times and not reading what it is. This is a pain 12 pro.

Nothing here. SE 3. There seem to have been very many diverse notification issues ever since the release of iOS 16. I for one don't experience any of them. At first thought, I feel this could be because of your show previews setting. Do you have it set to off? I wouldn't know why VO is saying it twice, just another bug perhaps, though maybe change your preview settings so the "Notification" text shouldn't pop up.

My seeting is the sane and nothing was change. I do get them in my iPad. VO does read them in it.

I see the bug in iOS 16.1 and in 16.2 beta has not been fixed. When youā€™re on a phone call and youā€™re using the earpiece, especially with my iPhone 12 mini, the volume will not change. Not convenient when youā€™re out somewhere as the volume is very low. Iā€™m just amazed that this bug has been around and hasnā€™t been addressed.

Since I updated to IOS 16, there have been times when I get a Show Notifications button on my lock screen instead of the usual list of notifications: this has happened often for me in both IOS 16.0 and IOS 16.1, but double-tapping this button brings them back. I'm not sure whether this is a bug or just Apple's way of not making the lock screen look too full. I'm getting used to double-tapping Show Notifications, but that button surprised me, given that I have set notifications to always show previews.

The notification is there, you just need to slide right to find it. It is close to the lock screen. This is a bug. iPad 9 does read them without no issues.

I've noticed this too ever since updating to 16.1 on my iPhone 13. It is a bit of an odd one as sometimes the volume buttons will alter the call volume through the earpiece, other times they won't. I'm trying to work out whether it's random or whether it only happens if, say, you make a call using the recent calls list. I'm leaning towards thinking it's random. not the end of the world but I would like it fixed.

People with hearing aids are having also this issue. For them it is.

Thatā€™s very odd, another couple of observations I have noticed. If someone calls me, from time to time I can use the volume buttons and they do work, but thatā€™s occasionally, but I have noticed it more when people call me. Also, the irony of it all is when I call Apple to report it over the phone, the volume buttons did work. šŸ˜‚ Not sure what to make of it all really. Yeah letā€™s hope it does get fixed soon.

I a not sure if I am the only one on this planet who is facing this issue; when creating an automation in the shortcut app. that has the functions text and speak text; when demo is run it works fine if a Siri voice is chosen i.e. Language English United States Siri Voice 5.

But when the automation is triggered the Siri voice is either choppy OR the entire text is not read out. I created an automation that has the following text that is to be spoken when my morning alarm is stopped:
Good morning Mister Kayne

Today is Wednesday, 4 Noveember, 2022
It is currently cloudy and 24 degrees centergrade at location/ city
There would be a high of and a low of and a percent chance of rain.
Have a great day!

But when this automation is triggered the Siri voice would not speak the text it would just stop at Good or sometimes not do anything when triggered!

This is not a bug; it's a setting you should change. You have chosen stacked notification alerts. Go to settings/ Notifications and on top choose the list option. However, I am annoyed with my older/ deleted messages still showing up in the list at least you get to read your messages instead of having to open the messages app.
