TO add to this body of literature, I have compiled 10 useful tips for braille users of…

Are You Ready For Some American Football

Posted on Thursday, December 19, 2013 by blindgator
As blind iPhone users who live in the United States, we really are spoiled, as most of the limited content out their about VoiceOver is directed at us. So when my colleague Jackie Brown at AppleVis wrote a great blog entry that primarily focused on iPhone Sports Apps for those living outside the U.S., my first thought was what about us U.S. sports fans? Yes, I know quite self centric of me, but hey, I’m an American and aren’t we known for being self obsessed? All kidding aside, I wanted to…

What Accessibility Means To Me

Posted on Monday, December 2, 2013 by blindgator
You say potato and I say potato, and yes, I know VoiceOver read both of those the same way, so you will have to imagine the commonly used expression. Being a VoiceOver user on the iPhone and Mac since 2009, I have become very familiar with the word accessibility and the hash tag #A11Y. The interesting thing about both of these terms, is that they mean something different to everyone.

If you are like me and follow people in the blind tech community on Twitter, or…

Which ā€˜i’ To Buy?

Posted on Sunday, November 17, 2013 by Jackie Brown
Apple has recently released the iPhone 5S, iPhone 5C, iPad Air, and iPad Mini with Retina display.  All these devices complement the company's existing stable of products.  So how do you decide what is right for you, and which i to buy?

My personal view - and of course this is very subjective - is to ask yourself the following questions:

  1. What do you anticipate using the device for?
  2. …

To Mac or Not To Mac?

Posted on Thursday, November 14, 2013 by blindgator
To Mac or Not To Mac? That is the question for many of us visually impaired computer users.

Having been a long time member of the AppleVis community and a long time commentor, I was very excited when the AppleVis Editorial Team was looking to bring on some new members. Being someone who lost his last remaining vision in 2009, and never having used a screen reader, but in desperate need of one, I was at a cross road.…

Possible Accessibility Bugs for VoiceOver Users in iOS 7

Posted on Wednesday, September 18, 2013 by David Goodwin

IMPORTANT: we need to stress that as recently as this morning, the Apple Accessibility Team was unable to replicate most of the problems listed below. This could be because there have been changes made to iOS since the Gold Master version which was used by us when testing for problems. It could also simply be operator error on our part, or local and specific problems caused by external factors not related to iOS. This means that it is possible that you will not encounter all…
