When browsing over something like a newsfeed, which has a title, time, byline, content, and maybe some other controls such as Like or Comment, do you prefer that VoiceOver read out each element separately? Or would you prefer the whole item to be read aloud and the possible actions be put in "Actions Available"?
iOS and iPadOS
If image description is on, VoiceOver seems to treat text fields or table cells that contain a single character as though it is an image, and provides a spurious description of it. For example, if I encounter a table cell containing the single character "1", VoiceOver may say "one straw drinking". I've reported this to Apple; has anyone else encountered this?
In What's app, when I select an audio message to be played, voiceover attempts to describe the image after I double tap, such as "Possible person, possible text"
This causes the beginning of the message to be unintelligible because voiceover is stepping on it.
The workaround for me is to stop speech, then double tap, but surely there is a more elegant way.
I made sure image descriptions was off in voiceover settings, but no dice.
Any suggestions?
Thanks much.
Hi.
I can't find any documentation for voice over in ios.
I can find osx docs but not ios.
can you help me with this?

Suppose you wish to share a photo and are searching for the desired option in the share menu, or you have a shortcut set to bring up a dialogue box and prompt you to make a selection. There should be other similar instances where VoiceOver fails to distinguish the popup window from the main window, but these are two that I can think of for now. I don't know about VoiceOver on MacOS or iPadOS, but apparently we need better object navigation for VoiceOver like that of NVDA for all Apple operating systems. Does the iPad differ from the iPhone in that respect?
Someone I know has court and the documents on the website are in PDF.aspx format. VoiceOver doesn’t read this format and image explorer only reads a little bit. Is there a way VoiceOver can read this type of format?
Thanks
I have a new iPhone SE three running iOS 15.5. When I turn on my phone every time the screen curtain comes on VoiceOver does not come back on. As you have to enter a password to unlock the phone I’m not able to unlock it anymore. I cannot turn on voiceover with Siri or the home button before unlocking and VoiceOver does not turn on on the lock screen when the phone restarts.
Is anyone having trouble with voiceover not reading messages when the iphone is in locked status? I get an alert that I have a message, but the message is no longer read. The messappears in the middle of the screen but I have to tap on the alert before voice over will read the message to me. If no one else is having this problem, what can I do to resolve this?
Thank you
Tanya
Hi,
I just realized that one of the reasons that I don't use Microsoft Word on my iPhone is that when I format text for sighted people, that VoiceOver does not speak the styles and font information, such as bold and italic. On the PC, with a more robust screen reader, such as NVDA, you can set it to read the names of Word styles, as you come across them, which gives you a better idea of the structure of your document.
I hope I'm missing something here.
Hi all,
In my iPhone6 the Level App which is on the second page of the Compass App in the Extras folder, doesn't work with Voiceover.
The problem is with Voiceover not announcing automatically the level angle changes.
In the Compass App it does work.
BTW, I reported this to Apple several times and was told that it will be addressed in the next iOS release, but after several updates, it is still not fixed.
Has anyone used and noticed this bug?
Thanks
I’ve got an iPhone SE, latest generation, and my phone recently received the latest update to iOS 16.6. I didn’t notice this until just now, and the update took place several days ago, so it could be coincidental, but I’m experiencing a pretty serious problem in the iMessages app with voiceover.
Hi. I recently got a new iPhone 11 Pro for Christmas. I have been having issues where it will speak in a different language and I'm not able to perform the two-finger scrub to go back. Then after the iPhone unlocks and I continue setup it sasys, "Hello) in English but then I eventually hear the message "Swipe up to open", but I am not aboe to swipe up with VoiceOver on. I have to turn VoiceOver off and get sighted help to swipe. I then turn VoiceOver back on.
Hi,
Is it possible to stop Voiceover from speaking the track position while an audio file is running on the iPhone 6E with IOS 12? I wish to study a piece of audio by repeating short segments of the same section . I used to be able to keep my focus on the track position slider without Voiceover calling out the changing track position. Lately, I find that Voiceover is always speaking the track position and so I cannot hear the audio. I can move the focus off the track position slider onto the play/pause button but I would prefer to keep the focus on the slider if I can.
My blind sister decided to take the plunge and bought a previously owned iPhone 7 32GB to see how she got on with it. She's not very techy minded unlike me. I have been setting it up for her without any issues, but I've noticed VO falls silent, mostly when in edit fields but also at other times. The only way to get VO back is to lock the iPhone, then unlock it, lock it, unlock it, then it seems ok for some time but inevitably falls silent again later on and I have to go through the lock/unlock/lock/unlock process again.
Whilst doing some general exploring today, I've discovered that a bug that was somewhat minor [yet very annoying at times] has been fixed in the latest version of iOS [8.1.2]. In previous versions of iOS 8, when VoiceOver was active, apps and folders located on the bottom row of a home screen could not be moved using the double-tap and hold gesture.
Given all the discussion about what is broken in iOS 8, I decided to start a topic about what is actually working better in iOS 8 than it was in iOS 7. In spite of all the flaws, Apple did manage to fix some things in this new OS. I will list a few things I've noticed personally.
I’m trying to write a review of an app in the App Store and voiceover keeps crapping out on me. I’ll be typing or using the rotor text navigation options and voiceover will completely lose focus, eventually landing somewhere in the status bar at the top of the screen. When I touch the screen where the app should be I just get that clunking sound indicating that voiceover cannot focus on any controls. Clicking away from the app and coming back again along with turning off and restarting voiceover seems to temporary get it working again, but then the issue just happens again.
