Posted on Tuesday, February 25, 2014 by Scott Davert

Introduction

This post was partially inspired by This article and others like it which give general advice about seemingly less known features of an iDevice. You will also find blog entries on other tech topics scattered throughout the internet which have similar tips for pretty much any mainstream type of technology. TO add to this body of literature, I have compiled 10 useful tips for braille users of…

Posted on Friday, January 10, 2014 by AppleVis
At the end of each month, the members of the AppleVis Editorial Team take a look at all of the apps that have been posted to the site, along with those that have had significant updates during that month. We then vote on which of these we think is the most noteworthy. As always, the selection is wide, with one app being in the games category, another being in the social networking category, and the second runner up being in the utilities category. Some months, we have a flood of new app entries…

Are You Ready For Some American Football

Posted on Thursday, December 19, 2013 by blindgator
As blind iPhone users who live in the United States, we really are spoiled, as most of the limited content out their about VoiceOver is directed at us. So when my colleague Jackie Brown at AppleVis wrote a great blog entry that primarily focused on iPhone Sports Apps for those living outside the U.S., my first thought was what about us U.S. sports fans? Yes, I know quite self centric of me, but hey, I’m an American and aren’t we known for being self obsessed? All kidding aside, I wanted to…

Which ā€˜i’ To Buy?

Posted on Sunday, November 17, 2013 by Jackie Brown
Apple has recently released the iPhone 5S, iPhone 5C, iPad Air, and iPad Mini with Retina display.  All these devices complement the company's existing stable of products.  So how do you decide what is right for you, and which i to buy?

My personal view - and of course this is very subjective - is to ask yourself the following questions:

  1. What do you anticipate using the device for?
  2. …

Posted on Friday, September 13, 2013 by Scott Davert
The national Library Service for the Blind and Physically Handicapped (NLS) has submitted their app, called BARD Mobile, for approval to the Apple App Store. Neil Bernstein, who works for NLS, estimated that it could take 1 or 2 more weeks for the app to be approved which would get it in to the hands of NLS patrons. The app, as indicated previously, will support the reading of braille files through the Web Braille service when using braille displays. it will also support the playback of the…

The optimal RSS reader: life in the post-Google Reader era

Posted on Friday, May 17, 2013 by Amir Soleimani

It was a shocker. When Google announced that Google Reader will shut down on July 1st, apart from the usual cycle of disvelief and sorrow the first thing which came to my mind was what to use after Google Reader's demise. On the one hand, Google Reader provides an easy way to read RSS feeds in a synchronyzed way regardless of one's platform of choice. On the other (and this is my true source of concern…

The 99 Dollar Question: a Review of the Humanware Communicator App

Posted on Monday, September 10, 2012 by Scott Davert
For quite some time, deaf-blind users of iDevices have been able to use face to face communication with the public through the notes app. This consists typically of an iDevice (iPod, iPad, or iPhone) paired with a braille display and bluetooth keyboard. The deaf-blind person can then type using the braille input keys on their display, while the sighted and hearing person types on the bluetooth keyboard. All text shows up on both the braille display and the screen of the iDevice. Now, there is…

iOS 6 announced at WWDC 2012

Posted on Monday, June 11, 2012 by Scott Davert
iOS 6 announcements note: I did miss a few things because the audio was a bit difficult, so anyone who has the remaining info is welcome to post it. Siri can now launch apps. Also, more support for other languages and countries. There are also more local search type options, including those outside the US. Facebook integration. Facebook and Twitter are now options in the Notification Center, and App Store gets Facebook integration so you can tell apps that your friends like. Also, do not…

iOS or Android for the visually impaired: nine reasons that count

Posted on Sunday, March 11, 2012 by Amir Soleimani

When it comes to choosing a new handset, I can become as meticulous and picky as hell! It’s not necessarily a vice; however, if it takes more than three months to make your final decision, it can no longer be called a ā€œvirtueā€ either.

Having used several Symbian handsets such as the 6630, N73, N82, N86, and X7, I finally decided to kiss goodbye to Symbian about four months ago. My phones were sort of decrepit and I needed something new. Having had heard many good points about Android…

Rumours about the impending launch of the iPad 2 and the release of iOS 4.3 appear to be converging.

There now appears to be a growing consensus that Apple will launch the iPad 2 on the 13th of February with iOS 4.3 coming one day later.

Macstories quotes a reliable source to support the above statement, adding that iOS 4.3 will be live by 1000 PST. iOS 4.3 will bring improved support for AirPlay, clean up the existing code and introduce iTunes app subscriptions that will…

Apple set to remove Home button from iPhone 5 and iPad 2

Posted on Thursday, January 13, 2011 by David Goodwin

The introduction of multitouch gestures in the new iOS 4.3 will coincide with the removal of the only physical button present on the front of the iPad and the iPhone, sources close to the matter have told BGR.

The site adds that the iPad will be the first to lose the button and that the iPhone will be the next on the list; it is likely that the iPod Touch will follow suit.

Instead, multitouch gestures will be used to access the home screen and to launch the app switcher. It is…
