Light Detector Earns a Place in the AppleVis iOS App Hall of Fame

Posted on Friday, August 31, 2012 by AppleVis

The app chosen this month for induction into our iOS App Hall of Fame is Light Detector.

Gaining double the number of votes of its nearest challenger, this would seem to be a very popular choice among the AppleVis community.

Light Detector is easy to use. Just run the application and point your iDevice camera in any direction. Light Detector will transform any natural or…

Addressing LookTel Breadcrumbs GPS app launch delay

Posted on Friday, August 17, 2012 by AnonyMouse
Just recieved this news straight from the Looktel PR department and they wanted me to pass this along to you all. We will have to wait a bit longer for the Looktel Breadcrumbs but there are great news about the updates on the MoneyReader and the Recognizer! Can't wait for those updates! So here is what the Looktel PR folks had to say: "Our legal team has advised us against releasing Breadcrumbs GPS until they have been able to fully vet and evaluate the application. Breadcrumbs GPS has been…

A truly worthwhile application is to become accessible soon

Posted on Wednesday, August 15, 2012 by Amir Soleimani

If you're into words, you're always on the lookout for the best and the most decent vocabulary titles, word games, puzzles, and, last but not least, dictionaries. And you might want to take your treasury of words with you -- regardless of the OS you use. A good dictionary is the bread and butter of every logophile and having access to what many scholars deem authoritative is of utmost importance.

Ever since I purchased my iPhone 4S, I started looking for an accessible dictionary.…

iOS or Android for the visually impaired revisited: Jelly Bean or iOS?

Posted on Wednesday, August 15, 2012 by Amir Soleimani

Back in March when I took a stab at comparing iOS and Android from the perspective of a blind user, Android 4.1 (a.k.a. Jelly Bean) was nonexistent and no one knew what access features it would offer. Having tested Google Nexus 7 for more than two weeks and having seen blind users' opinions of Android 4.1, I'm now in a better position to compare iOS and Android yet again. So tighten your belt as I…

Why switching allegiance isn't always bad: I'm now using TuneIn Radio Pro

Posted on Sunday, August 12, 2012 by Amir Soleimani

The moment I purchased my iPhone 4S more than six months ago, my first thought was oddly focused on getting a great radio application for it -- I'm a radio maniac. I spent a few days researching here and there, trying to sift through the App Store, AppleVis and a couple of more relevant websites. At the time I came to the conclusion that ooTunes Radio was the best app of its ilk despite its $4.99…

Announcing our most Predictable Editorial Team Pick of the Month to Date

Posted on Wednesday, August 8, 2012 by AppleVis

Each month the AppleVis Editorial Team sit down at our virtual conference table and decide which of the apps submitted to the site during that month should be our monthly pick ... and boy, was it a tough decision this month!

Lots of great apps were featured on AppleVis in July, and a number of those stimulated a lot of discussion, some of which was quite heated.

We tried hard not to be predictable with our choice, but we ultimately had to accept that Fleksy was without…

ViA: Why Reinvent the Wheel?

Posted on Sunday, July 22, 2012 by Michael Hansen
The Braille Institute recently released a new app, ViA (Visually Impaired Apps), that lists other apps developed specifically for people who are blind or visually impaired. Even before I finished reading the app's AppleVis entry (http://www.applevis.com/ios-app-directory/education/braille-institute), I thought to myself, "Why are they reinventing the wheel?" The blind community already has mailing lists, podcasts, and--of course--AppleVis. Do we really need an app to help us sort through…

My Desert Island App

Posted on Friday, July 20, 2012 by Michael Hansen
We've all heard the familiar question before: You're stuck on a desert island. If you could bring one thing with you, what would it be--and why? In recent years, my answer to such a question was simple: my cane. Without it, I'd be in big trouble. If given more choices, I would invariably include things like food and water...and my iPhone. Oh, and speaking of that iPhone. If I had to choose only one app to have on my phone, what would I choose? The answer, for me at least, is not an easy…
