Accessibility Comments

Unfortunately, this app is not very accessible at all. On the iPhone, there are 5 unlabeled tabs across the bottom of the screen. When using the VoiceOver left/right swipe gestures, it remains unclear what items a person has pinned on their boards. It appears as if the content is laid out in some kind of table, and VO seems to read words from left to right, skipping over certain elements. Exploring the screen by touch doesn’t yield better results either. The app also uses a tap and hold gesture to allow users to quickly repin items, which is not accessible with VoiceOver due to the use of graphical icons which only appear while your finger remains on the screen. Also, when looking at the profile of someone you follow, the button to unfollow individual boards is reported by VO as selected, even when it has not been pressed. When run on an iPad, the app seems to have the same issues, except that the unlabeled tabs are replaced with a menu that VO does read.

VoiceOver Performance

VoiceOver reads most page elements.

Button Labeling

Most buttons are clearly labeled.

Usability

There are some accessibility issues with this app, but it can still be used if you are willing to tolerate these issues and learn how to work around them.

App Rating Deserves Review Due to Accessibility Improvements

By Jen

6 years 7 months ago

I'm using this app on an IPhone 6+, and it seems to have improvements that merit a review of its accessibility rating. The tabs on the bottom of the screen are labeled. VoiceOver seems to read the boards just fine, although I think the use of headings would make it much easier to scroll through things. I can't say if the "tap and hold" gesture for pinning works, because I wasn't aware of it, but I was able to pin something using a doubletap on the "pin" button. Enhancements could still be made for a better VO user experience, but overall, this app seems much better.

thanks for posting. This app is truly redesigned. It works much better than the last time I tried to use the app.

Grr Pinterest still has issues

By Michelle Odom

So I pulled it out of my hamster brain that pinterest is supposed to work better now; I excitedly tried it as the text book I am reading suggested that I do a search for low-tech assistive technology devices. So I got to playing around. I found that I could click on pins quite easily, but couldn't read directions for recipes, and sometimes had a hard time finding ingredients. It seems like the app places more emphasis on telling you more stuff to click on, until you find yourself in a sea of pins with no remembrance of how you wound up there. A guide or podcast would be most helpful, as I think this is a very cool site, but still needs work. I wasted a lot of time trying to figure out how to get to different parts instead of learning about easy recipes or dyi gifts.
