Question about pronunciations with voiceover

By Matt, 21 May, 2017

I love the pronunciation dictionary in iOS. When I dictate how a word should be pronounced and then choose from the list of possible pronunciations, I notice voiceover reads them as symbols and letters rather than words. Does anyone know why this is?

When dictating, ipa (international phonetic alphabet) is used. For example, to get the a sound, a character named schwa is used.
