Description of App

YO. This is AutoRap. It turns speech into rap, and corrects bad rapping.

With Smule’s proprietary “rappification” technology, AutoRap maps the syllables of your speech to any beat, creating a unique rap every time.

As the lyrical master, Jay-Z, says "This is the death of Auto-Tune, moment of silence". This is AutoRap.

"you simply speak into your phone, and the app chops your voice and buries it in a whole mess of autotuney goodness" --engadget

Talk into the app, and AutoRap magically morphs your speech into a legit rap. Create your own original rap songs with Freestyle Beats, or use Premium Songs from artists like Snoop Dogg and Nicki Minaj, to AutoRap with the songs you know and love.

Switch to Rap Mode and flaunt your skillz by rapping along to your favorite songs, following the lyrics that scroll across the screen. AutoRap will correct your flow, snapping your syllables to the rhythmic grid of the underlying beat.

Now go share your creations with your friends via email, Facebook or Twitter. Sing them a happy birthday they’ll never forget, or give ‘em the lowdown on the sandwich you ate for lunch.

And don’t forget to show some love for your homies to help them reach the Top Rappers spot.

The current song catalogue includes songs and beats by:

  • BOB
  • Snoop Dogg
  • Ludacris
  • Tupac feat. Dr. Dre

Accessibility Comments

Most of the buttons I've encountered in this app are either unlabeled or have poor labelling. On the main screen, there are three buttons, two of which are unlabeled. I'm guessing the first button on the left is for Talk mode, the second is for Rap mode, and the third brings up a menu, judging by it's label anyway. If you press either of the two unlabeled buttons, the app goes into a recording mode, where you can speak what you want to "rap". There is only one button on this screen which, when double-tapped, will start the processing. While the rap plays, there's an unlabelled button that will allow you to stop playback if you want. After the resulting rap plays, another screen will pop up with buttons that let you share what you've done, or will allow you to start over. These ones are labelled properly. At least at the moment, I'm finding it hard to select a beat. I managed to bring up the screen where you can choose a beat, but it appears there's only one button that will cycle between beats. From what I've seen anyway, there's no way of getting out of this screen.

VoiceOver Performance

VoiceOver reads a few page elements.

Button Labeling

Few buttons are clearly labeled.

There are some accessibility issues with this app, but it can still be used if you are willing to tolerate these issues and learn how to work around them.

Other Comments

From what I've heard of this app so far, it seems to be a blending of Songify and Talkapella combined, though you get a longer recording time than the 20 seconds in Talkapella. Regardless, I think I'd probably enjoy it more if it was as accessible as Songify.

It's been a week since AutoRap was released at the time of this comment, and probably because more tracks are available for it, I'm now able to select a different beat without any problem. When I press the "Select beat" button (either in the menu or at the screen that comes up after a rap is finished), there is a Close button, followed by the name of the song currently selected, and a button marked something like "Talk On". When this button is pressed and selected, you'll hear what you're saying into the microphone while the music plays (sort of like Songify's Live Mode), but without the autotune. That will be applied during processing. Anyway, there will probably be three unlabeled buttons before the word "Premium". Double-tapping any of these buttons will play a sample of a different beat. When you find the one you want, you can then move to and double-tap the Close button, and the beat you just heard will be selected.
