Description of App:
Workflow is your personal automation tool, enabling you to drag and drop any combination of actions to create powerful workflows for your iPhone, iPad, and Apple Watch.
Workflow includes over 200 actions, including those for Contacts, Calendar, Maps, Music, Photos, Camera, Reminders, Safari, AirDrop, Twitter, Facebook, Dropbox, Evernote, iCloud Drive, and Health, to name a few.
For example, you can use Workflow to:
* Make animated GIFs
* Add a home screen icon that calls a loved one
* Make PDFs from Safari or any app with a share sheet
* Get directions to the nearest coffee shop in one tap
* Tweet the song you're listening to
* Get all of the images on a web page
* Send a message including the last screenshot you took
* And so much more...
Your workflow creations can be launched from inside the Workflow app, from other apps using Workflow's Action Extension, or from our new lightning-fast Today Widget. You can even export a workflow as a standalone app on your home screen.
Workflow opens up infinite possibilities of what you can do with your iPhone, iPad, and Apple Watch. But this is just the beginning. Stay tuned.

***AppleVis Editorial Team Note: this section has been updated in light of a recent update to this app. The original comments have been removed as they no longer apply.***
This app has been updated to work with VoiceOver. Actions are now draggable, and will announce when you successfully add one to a workflow or where they are as you drag them around within a workflow. You can also swipe up or down with one finger on an action in the Actions List until you hear "add to workflow", then double tap. Double tapping an action without swiping first will cause VoiceOver to speak the action's description. Even for seasoned VoiceOver users, enabling hints is a good idea until you get used to this app.
There are two areas where VoiceOver users may run into difficulty. First, when swiping or scrolling through a list of actions, focus can sometimes jump around, and the list may not scroll properly. Second, the keyboard will sometimes not appear when you try to enter text in an edit field. I've seen this in other apps, too, and so am pretty sure it's an iOS bug and not the fault of the Workflow developers. Note that braille screen input will still work, or you can swipe left or right to find the key you want, then double tap.

#1 Workflow is more accessible than first thought
Submitted by Scott H on
Hello all,
My friend Keith and I spent some time with Workflow and found that it is possible to create workflows. Now, I will say it is not super easy and neither of us have figured out all possibilities or found all issues. Here is a few things to be aware of. First, once you get past the introductory screens things seem to be much easier. When moving an action into the workflow you only need to use short movements. For example, you would double tap and hold an action and instead of sliding it across the screen, just slide it maybe about a half inch to the right. The idea is you are moving actions from the left side of the screen to the right. I want to try building a couple of actions and if I can get a reasonably good handle on things I will record a podcast. If you are interested at all in Workflow please e-mail the developer or send a tweet. Please provide comments that are helpful and not that the app sucks or it's broken etc. I am finding more developers who are sincerely interested in accessibility and want to try making their apps accessible and we only need to contact them with positive feedback and encouragement. Workflow is a very cool app, but I understand the $2.99 USD price tag is 40 percent off as an introductory price.

This one got me as well, what you have to do is find the name of the workflow with your finger, turn VO off with the triple tap, press the same location where the workflow is then enable VO again. Bit messy but doable. Once VO is back on, you're at the usual point of moving actions about

#7 My Bug List So Far
Submitted by mehgcap on
This is a great app, and will be very useful in a myriad of ways to people. It is currently usable with VoiceOver, but not as easy or accessible as it could be. I'm listing bugs not to denigrate the app or developers in any way, but rather for two reasons.
First, if other VO users want to use this app, they should know what they are going to encounter. Second, I hope the developer will see this comment and realize what needs work. If you are reading this after December of 2014, you may have an updated version in which some or all of these bugs are fixed. If I remember, I'll update this list as the app is updated.
Note that I have only spent a couple hours with this app so far. I haven't tried many of the actions, and there may be workarounds of which I am not aware. I know that one can edit a Workflow by disabling VoiceOver, tapping the Workflow, then re-enabling VoiceOver, but I don't consider that enough of a workaround to eliminate the bug.
#8 version 1.0.1: released December 2014
Submitted by KE7ZUM on
I heard they fixed a lot of voice over issues in this version. I'm notsure though. I'm seeing the same release on itunes as I am on the cult of mac blog.
Again " not sure if they have voice over improvements Can someone let us know? I'm not about to buy this app yet as I'm still not sure what it does.
#9 Version 1.1 released today
Submitted by KE7ZUM on
Hello to all. Here is the good news re version 1.1 for those of us that have it in our app stores. I don't yet. Mine still shows version 1.0 and it's still $2.99. I took advantage of that.
The update contains over 50 actions and voice over fixes. Since i can't paste in the release notes in mark down for yah all I give you the link to read about it.
I'm excited to try this app as I find myself doing daily tasks that should be second nature and a lot less tapping.
Be blessed and hope this helps someone.

#13 getting past the introductory screen?
Submitted by Toonhead on
Ok, this app is extremely confusing, all this stuff about dragging some kind of image? Can someone help make sense of this?
#14 got past the tutorial
Submitted by Toonhead on
Well, after swearing a blue streek I finally got past the tutorial screen, and I was only able to do it by finding the done button. Sorry guys, but this app just isn't very intuitive, at least not at first glance. I'm sure with a bit of explanation from someone more knowledgable it will be easier, but at this moment I'm beginning to regret my purchase of the app.

#16 A bug I found
Submitted by Ken Downey on
I made a really cool workflow. What it does is get info from the clipboard and a Pam's it to my journal file in dropbox. That way, I can just make a journal entry with embryo, then hit the journal button on the home screen… And all of a sudden I have a pended the text I wrote in embryo to the journal. I wanted to do a more complete process, where I have it get a fast from dropbox, copied to the clipboard, I edit and embryo, then another workflow saves that file wherever I specify… But when I am in the same file dialog of that workflow, all I get is a blank screen. Anyone else find this?and I mean Emma braille not to embryo of course. Siri…
#17 Ken, is the save file dialog
Submitted by Ari Weinstein on
Ken, is the save file dialog you're referring to part of Workflow's Save File action? I'm a little unclear on what exactly the workflow you describe is doing.
#18 Saving to dropbox
Submitted by Ken Downey on
i'm saving the contents of the clipboard to dropbox, asking the user where to put the file. If I specify the file, there is no problem. It's just what I ask the user where to put it.

#21 Using WorkFlow to Automate Sending of Text Message?
Submitted by Scott on
I have not been able to accomplish this using the iOS shortcut feature. I would like to be able to send a text message to my Uber driver from within the Uber app that says something like this: "I am a blind guy using a white cane. You will need to look for me upon your arrival since I obviously cannot recognize your vehicle."
I do not want to have to type this message each time I need to contact my Uber driver. Would Workflow be a solution for this task? If so, I will relisten to Alex's podcast and take the time to learn how the app works. Alex, thanks so much for doing the podcast.

#25 list of all actions
Submitted by Chris Wright on
Hi,
How do I view a complete list of available actions? I can only scroll the screen to 38 rows. The search box is nice, but without knowing what actions are possible, I don't find it useful. Can I obtain a complete list of actions available?
#26 Go to actions and go to view
Submitted by KE7ZUM on
Go to actions and go to view all. They will all be there. Ok, I didn't get the exact buttons right but this should help.
#27 Thanks
Submitted by Chris Wright on
Thanks for this. I've just found out that this app is a lot more useful now that I can view all available actions.
#28 battery status
Submitted by Chris Wright on
Hello,
Is it possible to set up Workflow to report battery status as it increases or decreases? I want it to read the battery level as it discharges or charges by 10 percent or some other amount. I can already use the battery status and speak text options to get Workflow to speak the current battery level. However, this has to be run manually. Can I set this up to automatically report intervals of battery life or other data? Is this possible or do I really have to jailbreak just to get a simple feature like this? I feel like this app would be so much more useful if Apple didn't impose so many restrictions on apps and how they run.
#29 No it is not. Workflow is not
Submitted by KE7ZUM on
No it is not. Workflow is not for that function. There are ios apps that will do this for you though. I forgot what they are as I never use them as I know my phone well by now lol!
#30 Usefulness
Submitted by Voracious P. Brain on
I'll post the same comment here and on the Launch Center Pro page, since I purchased both. Both are slick programs and are accessible, once you figure out the trick (in Workflow, double tap to add an action to the workflow: no dragging required. In Launch Center, go straight to Edit, then double-tap on a blank area to get an action prompt). But neither does what I was hoping for, which was to launch specific actions within the apps on my phone. Workflow has a very small number of supported apps. Launch Center's list of supported apps is much larger... just, not the ones on my phone. And the actions for most apps are limited to launching them. One of the most frequently-cited uses for Workflow is to text/facetime/phone a specific contact, but Siri can already do this. Siri can do a lot of the things that these apps purport to do, actually. I thought I would at least find something in IFTTT that I'd like to do, but not so. If you need things like image manipulation or file manipulation, they're rich apps. Or to launch Google Maps directly in walking/driving/transit modes. I'll probably use Workflow to load various usernames and passwords into the clipboard.
I'm not saying these are bad apps, but only to be aware of what you're buying. They aren't genuine macro-recording apps or anything like that.
