New App Question
I am developing a new app. Is it better to use a slider for changing values or two buttons, one to lower the value and the other to raise it? This app will have many different values that can be adjusted to different values. I am not sure the best way to do this. Thanks for your help.
I would think a slider would be better for this
Let me start by saying thanks for posting, I don't know what your app is but it's great that you're considering accessibility :)
If it is like how I think it is, a slider would definitely be the best option. I think having buttons would just make things a bit complicated to navigate.
I guess it depends on the app you are making. I am a IOS user so if the app is for the Mac the decision to have buttons or a slider might change.
I think having buttons might take up more space or clutter the interface depending on how many you will have on your app. I would prefer something that I can just flick up and down with one finger to change the values.
I'm not sure if VO recognizes sliders. I haven't delt with them at all. Even the one on the unlock screen of the phone, if it's still there, all VO users had to do was double tap on it to work.
Buttons require a lot of flicking back and fourth and clutter the interface. It is also possible for buttons to be confuzing. Sliders would be clearer, and simpler to adjust. If you have to switch units quickly and you need to move a lot of units down or up, flicking up on a slider is much more efficient than double tapping buttons. Thanks for considering accessability. I would be careful you design the sliders right though, as VoiceOver can not get along with some sliders if not designed correctly. When done right however, sliders are awesome!
For the most part, I like sliders better than buttons.
A good example of a slider is found in the hearing section of the accessibility settings of an iPhone. There is a balance control. While it appears from its location that this is designed for people with hearing difficulties, I use it as a way of adjusting audio in less than ideal stereo listening environments. It's just like the old balance control on audio gear.
In this instance, flicking up moves to the right, and down moves to the left. It's easy and intuitive.
However, there is a caveat. Apple's implementation only allows adjustment in 10 percent jumps, There are times when I'd like to move in smaller increments.
So, I think a slider is great, if you allow for appropriate granularity.
Definitely the slider. If it was just two buttons I might say differently.
To move that slider by less then 10 percent, double tap and hold, then move your finger on the screen. I have also seen this on other sliders to get more granular control.
