Seeking an accessible running app
Does anyone know of an accessible app that I can use for runs? I am mainly looking for one that can track your pace and distance. I would like it to use gps. Does anyone know of any apps that meet my needs? Thanks.
I recommend Runkeeper. You can choose different activities example Walking, running cycling etc. It works verry well with Voiceover. You can see distans, time, burned calories etc. It uses gps.
I have already tried run keeper but have found the screen you are in while running is confusing. First, when I flick from the top of the screen, I see a bunch of numbers. Then, there are different things like time and distance. Then more numbers. Could you explain to me the layout of this screen?
No, but any other person maybe is better to explane the screen.

I would recomend run keeper. Ok, I use it for walking, how ever, it is a wonderful app for both. You can find it in the ios app store.
I have had a friend explain to me the screen on run keeper. I have decided to give it another try. Before I download it, I would like to know if it works both indoors and outdoors? I am planning on running at the gym on rainy days, but since the app is gps based, I thought it wouldn't work indoors. Does anyone know if I can use this app indoors as well as outdoors? If I can't use this app indoors, does anyone know of one that can work in both environments?
I used it in doors and out of door. This is how I found out I walked 5 miles a day at my college and this included stairs as well.
I tried run keeper indoors at the gym, but it didn't work. Can you recommend another app?

Yes but it does have some unlabeled buttons but the app is accessible enough to be usable.
I have found an app called nike + running. If anyone has this app, can you tell me how accessible it is?
Hmm very odd. it worked fine with me. It calculated that I had done at least 2 inside a particular building I frequent. Keep trying I guess.
I've been using Map My Run for awhile and it seems to be pretty accessible. It uses gps and also allows for the entering of other activities from swimming and cycling to snow shovelling and ballroom dancing.
I guess, if you by "indoors", mean running on a treadmill, no GPS app like Run Keeper will work.
If that's the case, you will need something like iTreadmill, that will act as a stepcounter instead of measuring the physical distance you are moving.
iTreadmill is quite usable, and it will calculate your distance on a treadmill from your step length. There's a setting to accurately set your own step length, and that can be smart, but the default average length of I think 0,70 meters will get you started.
What I did, was that I started the app when I started walking on the treadmill, and I had a sighted person tell me when I had reached 2 kilometers on the treadmills display. Then I stopped and recalibrated the app by telling it that I had walked 2 kilometers.
Then it calculated my average step length from the distance that I had walked, and it now lines up pretty well with the display on the treadmill every time.
And this works of course the same for those of you who's using miles instead of kilometers.

You can add manual activities via Run keeper. If you have a fitbit or a similar activity tracker, it tells you the calories and average distance.
I recently did a comparison between run keepers, fitbits and my exercise bikes calory counter.
Since I was using an external HR sensor with runkeeper, but the app didn't know the distance, but Fitbit did, the numbers were quite different at first place. But after syncing two apps with each other, they corrected themselves and got pretty similar results.
So If you can read the calories burned from the treadmills screen, it would be good. If not, try purchasing an external heartrate monitor or an activity tracker.
GPS running ape such as RunKeeper use GPS to track your movement over the face of the earth. Therefore, they don't work if you are using a running machine, they literally measure X to Y.
Also, the screen during running isn't really the point, the one at the end is the main one.
RunKeeper gives you a whole hosts of verbal feedback during your workout. It is very detailed and totally configurable.
RunKeeper is a totally accessible and fully featured app. There really doesn't seem to be anything else nearly as good.

Have u tried zombees! Run! It's now fully accessible via VO. It is paid though--something like $10.
U might wish to check if some of these apps work w/Nike +. This is the way u do indoor apps. I believe zr does. You'll need to turn on your accelerometer for this to work.
