Hi folks. I have, in the last hour, finally upgraded to iOS 27. I waited until 27.2 as anecdotal evidence suggested that a lot of the bugs would be ironed out at that point. Since upgrading, I'm experiencing a strange issue. It only appears to be happening in text messages, but I am getting two voices. My default voice is Siri voice one in the UK but, when I go to a text message field, I get Daniel. The speed is slower so it's not even keeping my voice settings. If I swipe through my thread of messages, sometimes the voice switches between Siri voice one and Daniel, and can even switch voices if I swipe away from the message where the voice switched and go back again. I've looked at all my settings and Siri voice one is definitely my primary voice as far as I can see. I have also restarted my iPhone to ensure that it's not just a glitch leftover from the update. You are not the only one seeing this
I’ve definitely seen this in iOS 27.2. I’ll be midway reading something in my default voice is Catherine enhanced. My phone was switched to enhanced for absolutely no reason and then you try to swipe back to what you were reading and it will do the same thing again. Yeah this update has been so many issues. I’m not even. Going to pretend here so my voice is switching from Catherine enhance to Samantha enhance it’s completely jarring. And I have not found a solution for it unfortunately
You could try resetting voiceover settings
You could try resetting voiceover settings, although I doubt this will fix it because 27.2 has been a crappy update to be honest, but you can try it I’m sorry that you join 27 during this update. It is literally been the worst update for me ever in 27 overall.
some voice settings were altered
I found some voice settings were altered during the update process and I had to straighten them out. For example, when first I read a newspaper with EasyReader after having updated to IOS 27.0.1 I got a very slow Daniel Enhanced coming back at me, rather than Siri voice 1 which is my reading activity voice. when drilling down into the problem, I discovered the update had altered my settings under the reading activity. Changing it back to what I wanted fixed the problem.

I’m sorry. Unfortunately, I am not surprised. I’ve had multiple issues with iOS 27. I have like two ongoing cases right now and they’re not able to do with this issue. Yeah I was 27 but a complete mess. This has been the worst update for me ever in iOS and I’ve had it since 13.3 something. I hope it helps a little to know that you’re not the only one. Sorry I don’t have a solution. Also, I tried to go to reset my voice settings and it wouldn’t let me get past quick settings. It’s like it won’t let me swipe any further over. It’s crazy. I don’t know what’s going on with that. That was also a 27.0.1 thing. Which Apple does not know about because I had too many other things to report to them.

The advice given further down in the comments about checking your activity settings in VoiceOver seems to have done the trick for me. Ironically, it wasn't under messaging, but under reading. Very odd, but I'm so glad to have rid of Daniel. There's no need for that.

I have never ever set up activities. I can check that, but I honestly don’t know why it would’ve changed if I’ve never had that setting programs to begin with. Who knows I’ll look thank you bingo.

My speech volume and hints settings and audio tracking were altered. I couldn’t find anything about reading activities. I couldn’t check that because I couldn’t even find an option. I meant audio ducking. I don’t know why the hell they have to alter things in an update. Just update whatever with the problem in the first place. Sorry I’m just a little annoyed with Apple right now.

Voiceover is so old that I do not recall any major update. Just bug fixes. How old is Vo? iOS has gone through many changes including now AI and VO just get bug fixes. Perhaps is time for Apple to do a major rebuild of voiceover. JAWS does a change every year and updates every 3 months. Maybe when is the anniversary of voiceover. It could happen. Not ET will call home first before Apple addresses VO.

I agree Voice needs a major overhaul. Hey I’m just happy that I can help somebody else if I can help Apple then somebody else won’t have to go through this stuff. I really hope so anyway. I’m working with them actively on two separate cases right now. So hopefully somebody else will not have to go through what I’m going through because it’s incredibly frustrating especially for a new year. Somebody who’s a new Voice user this would be pretty much impossible. I can set up these things because I know. I’m just happy. I can hopefully help somebody else. This is crazy. Frustrating for me and I know relatively what I’m doing. Yeah we’ll see what happens with our anniversary.

Oh thanks, this is interesting. I had this problem but to be honest I am totally confused about whether it was on my Mac or phone, but i had found that browsing some Mail, suddenly Daniel would blurt out a line or two. Sometimes going backwards it would be normal, but always forwards on that line it was Daniel. And no one wants to hear that. Sorry, Daniel.
I am absolutely convinced that I have never set up any auto-switching activities on my Phone, but I checked anyway and found that I did have a programming activity which switched on coding context and I think those lines in the emails must have been source code. For me the voice was Default, but I changed it and just selected my current voice from the list.
Not sure if that is the problem but it might explain it, so thank you as I would never have thought to look there.
My first thought had been that it was some kind of language detection thing - but given I'm on British English anyway it would be odd to pick Daniel out of all voices.
