Hi everyone,

Many in the accessibility community know Piper as a fast, local neural text-to-speech engine. Following the launch of our iOS and macOS applications, we are excited to announce that Piper Android Mobile TTS has officially passed Google Play review, and our Closed Beta is now open!

What is Piper Mobile TTS?
Piper acts as a native system-level speech engine rather than just a standalone player. It brings high-quality, neural voice synthesis directly to your mobile device with zero cloud dependency. Once installed and configured, Piper integrates directly into Android's system Text-To-Speech settings, allowing it to drive TalkBack, screen readers, e-book readers, and assistive workflows seamlessly across the OS.

Key Highlights & Features:

• 100% On-Device & Privacy-First: All speech synthesis happens locally on your hardware. Your text is never sent to remote servers, and no telemetry or cloud tracking is involved. Once you download your chosen voice models, no internet connection is required.

• Native Accessibility Integration: Built specifically to work as a system TTS service. Once enabled in Android Accessibility settings, it functions across all apps using standard system speech interfaces.

• High-Fidelity Neural Speech: Powered by lightweight VITS/ONNX neural models, offering natural-sounding prosody, clear pronunciation, and smooth pacing without heavy CPU overhead.

• In-App Voice Management: To keep the initial download size light, voices are managed inside the app. You can sample, download, and manage a wide range of global languages and regional voice profiles directly from the catalog.

• Fully Free & Open-Source: GPL/MIT licensed with no hidden paywalls, subscriptions, or token limits.

Thanks for the support! 🚀

Just a quick note that this beta test is specifically for our Android app! Whenever you're ready to try it out on Android, the Google Group and Play Store links are in the post above.
If you ever want to check out the macOS / iOS app directly without using the App Store, you can find the repository and sources here:

Looking forward to hearing your thoughts on the Android beta!

Greetings!

I successfully joined the Google Group, and will share my findings there.

Posting here, mainly just to share phone specs I'm using:

Samsung OneUI 9 (Android 17), on a Galaxy S23+ running Talkback 17.1 and Talk Forward 26.102 (latest beta version.)
I'm happy that other app devs helped bringing these voices to the platform, but I am so proud that there is now an official piper application!
