Dear AppleVis Community,

We are excited to share some recent updates to the AppleVis Website that we hope will improve your experience:

  • Threaded Comments: Going forward, comments to forum topics will appear as a threaded discussion. Those who have been part of our community for several years may remember this feature from the past. We are excited to share that, as of today, this feature has been re-enabled. We hope that this will contribute towards making discussions easier to follow.
    • To reply to a particular comment, select the 'Reply' link below the comment. When your reply is posted, it will include "In Reply to" followed by the subject of the original comment (and a link to that comment), as well as the author's display name.
    • Threaded comments are not retroactive, so only comments posted in the future will be organized this way.
    • If you are replying to the original post (versus a comment), please navigate to the "Add New Comment" heading at level 2 and post your comment there, rather than using the "Reply" link under a comment. This way, a new thread will be created for your reply.
  • In another effort to keep discussions easier to follow and quickly navigate, please make every effort to include a Subject with your posts. If the Subject field is left blank, the first part of the post body will be placed into the Subject field--which can be confusing and less informative when navigating quickly through the comments by heading. By including meaningful subject lines in your comments, you can help to tidy up the Comments section of posts and also give readers a quick summary of what the comment is likely to be about--especially for posts that receive dozens (if not more) comments, like major OS release announcements.
  • For subscription emails, the subject line has been updated to include the title of the post to which the email refers. This is a work-in-progress, and any and all feedback is welcome.
  • We have created a new "Site News, Updates, and Feedback" forum. We always encourage people to use our Contact Form as the first and best option to reach the AppleVis Editorial Team with any questions or concerns; messages sent to this form go directly to everyone on the team and response times are likely to be quicker. However, we want a place for people to be able to share their feedback, and for us to share updates like this one. Over time, we will move existing feedback topics to this new area of the forum.

As always, please feel free to post any questions in the comments. Thank you for your contributions to AppleVis and for being part of our community.

Dear lord, I am glad that threaded comments are back! I missed that feature so much, and I have no idea why it was removed. But I'm so glad that it's back!

Subject basically says it all. I'm very glad replies are back! And since they are, I'm taking advantage of them by adding to the reply thread!

I honestly have no idea nor did I even see a reason why reply's were even needing to be disabled in the first place and it's about time there's a feedback section on here. Now we finally getting into modern civilization! It's about time the site moved forward Lol. All sarcasm aside, keep up the good work.

When i go to add a comment i swipe right or using my Hable and the format menu expands, i have to close it then find submit, is there a way i can fix that? It was working fine before you updated the site

Hi Joshua,

After typing in the text field, are you saying that the text format combo box is displaying all choices (instead of just letting you swipe past it? I am trying to reproduce this but have not been successful thus far.

yes, this is what's happening at least on my iPad, i am on my Samsung now so will see what happends when i post this

so on my Samsung everything works fine

I'm not sure if that's how they start out but I'm just looking through this thread and thought it would be nice, it'd make navigation a bit easier.

I'm sure I opened them and usually I'd like my websites to remember things about me but having them all closed when you open a page would be a bit easier I think, perhaps it could be a toggle in our profiles?

Thanks Brad and all for your input on this. I will investigate having the replies collapsed by default. This did not appear to be a setting that is easily modifiable out of the box (threaded comments is either 'on' or 'off', from what I've seen), but I will see what we can do. This may need to be put on the development roadmap though.

Question: how do you create a post on here? I’ve been on this website for, what? About four years now? And I genuinely can’t recall ever making an actual post. I’ve definitely commented on other people’s posts—probably way too many, if we’re being honest—but creating an original post? Yeah, drawing a total blank.

I think I tried once, maybe? But either I couldn’t find the option, or I got distracted and forgot what I was doing (which, let’s be real, happens more often than I’d like to admit). So I figured I’d just ask. I know this is kind of a random question, but hey—aren’t the only stupid questions the ones you don’t ask? How do you choose the categories for your post? I’ve never done that either, and I’d love to know how it works. Thanks in advance!

From the top left corner of the page, there should be a link labeled "Skip to main content". From here, swipe right about four times to land on the Main Menu button. Double tap this, then swipe over about two or three times until you land on Post sub navigation (should be a closed/collapsed button).
Double tap this to open/expand, then swipe over once to land on "Forum Topic".
From here, just follow the prompts, to create your post.

HTH. :-)

It's specifically said that the reply option will only be available in forum topics, not the blog posts. I was confused for two minutes about this as well before understanding it so I'm posting it here.
Great job!

Is there a reason there isn't a report link or am I just missing something? It seems like an obvious thing to have for cases where automatic word detection doesn't catch something, or where policies were broken without using words considered individually offensive.

Make replys level 4 so you can navigate between top comments more smoothly.

That approach makes sense.

When there are, say, three new posts—some being replies—the system places you at the first unread post, regardless of whether it’s a comment or a reply. This means you often end up rereading comments you’ve already seen just to find the next new reply.

Now that I think about it, this seems to be the standard everywhere, but it can make following long conversations difficult. I notice this a lot on Reddit, which is probably why they show the most popular comments at the top.

This will just make more sense. Assuming it's actually possible to selectively do that of course.

Thanks all for another great idea and the feedback.

I did some research, and unfortunately these type of options, are not configurable out of the box--meaning that they will require the skills of a developer. It is something that I see us being able to do, but not right away. In the meantime, please keep the ideas coming.
