macOS and Mac Apps

I have looked at the Getting Started sectin on this site for getting comfortable with my Mac and I still am hazey. For instance, I can't get Chrome installed on my Mac because I can't figure out how to install a DMG. I can bang my way through things like Safari but am still searching for the elusive Mac/VoiceOver guide. Happy for any resources folks can provide.

navigate to it using finder: then press cmd+ down arrow, then find app_name, application, cmd+c, cmd+shift+a, to get into applications folder, cmd+v app installed, open it with cmd+down arrow.

This is honestly one of the reasons why I've hesitated about setting my parents up with a Mac (and I love my Mac). The multiple ways you can install programs can be confusing.

After downloading googlechrome.dmg you double click it and then in Finder under your "locations" a new entry called "Google Chrome" will appear. It's similar as if you had plugged a USB stick into your computer. For me it automatically opened a popup window to this new location called "Google Chrome". You're supposed to drag the Google Chrome app icon in the popup to the Applications Folder icon in the same popup.

I don't know the steps for doing this with VoiceOver.

When your on the google crome application, press command c to coppy, then command shift a to go to applications folder, and press command v to paste it.

I'm honestly glad I returned my mac and stuck to windows.

I'd recommend you do the same if you've got a 30 day money back thing.

All that coppying and pasting just to use one app, no thanks.

I seam to remember something like, VO shift m to get to what we'd calll the aplocations menu/right click, on windows, I think there's an option there to open/instal an app? But I'm not sure as it's been years since i've used a mac.

Do macs have exe files but the mac version, like windows?

To those who like macs, great! But honestly from what I'm hearing, voiceover hasn't had any improvements in a long time and a lot of users are frustrated because of that.

Opening the DMG file, copying the directory it contains, and pasting it into the Applications folder is a quick process which doesn't require many keystrokes. Running an installation utility and going through all the dialogues is more work, especially as different installation tools have different interfaces.
So I really don't understand the cause for complaint here.

But I knew that when I got the Mac. I got it primarily just to try to master it and I can do a decent amount with it. The frustrating part is there is no comprehensive tutorial to learn the ins and outs and the help system isn't good enough to not have such a tutorial. JAWS has a comprehensive help system that I use whenever I run into difficulties (which I still do despite being a power JAWS user for a zillion years). NBP used to have a decent book about the Mac but it's copyrighted 2014 which needless to say is a bit out of date. Same with many of the articles on the AppleVis site under the Getting Started with the Mac (or whatever its name is) section. I just can't figure out the logic of this thing. I'm glad I got it as it was never supposed to be my primary computer, but I'd like to get more out of it.

Hi,
I have been using Mac for 10 years or so, and despite the numerous bugs that could really drive me mad at times, especially when I'm trying to focus on doing my work around the clock, I still love it by a great margin.
Prior to 2014, I had been using both Jaws and NVDA on a windows PC for another 7 years. I'd say the approach to using each operating system is fundamentally different, so it has its own up and down sides. For example, with Voice Over on Macs, you got to understand that they introduce a new cursor, that is Voice Over cursor. That is why some times controlling the device using only universal shortcuts is sufficient, while some other times you must control Voice Over itself.
Re Dave: If you need help getting started with your new Mac, I can help. Please send me a PM. I can sit down and work with you step by step.
