ios14 focus bug should be flagged as serious

By Troy, 20 September, 2020

I'm just curious, why isn't the focus bug in ios14 with vo jumping around marked as serious? I would consider this a serious bug. There are personally apps that I use where it's a nightmare even trying to log in because the log in screen uses html coding. Has anyone found a work around for this?
Thanks

iOS14 Focus Issues, Definitely A Serious Bug

By Tanya Harrison

I understand there are lots of things to work on when beta testing iOS, so not all bugs get reported. With this bug however, I wholeheartedly agree, if I'd known of the seriousness of this bug I would have waited until it was resolved, before upgrading to iOS14. Even navigating in the updates section under "My Account" in the app store is a nightmare.

Yes, focus jumping around is also a problem when trying to focus on a widget.

Focus issue in whatsapp

Even though whatsapp isn't some kind of html app it has focus issues when I touch the upper part of the screen to get out of the keyboard and into the recent messages. It takes me way more up.

It baffles me why this bug is under moderate instead of serious.

I agree. It is almost impossible to navigate when searching something in google.

I haven't heard anyone mention this serious bug that I have found when I'm typing on the keyboard on my iphone SE second genoration using ios 14.
Focus is not staying on virtical navigation when typing.
I can't move my finger up to get to a letter because voice over automatically changes it's focus to the character position on the roter.
This is extremely anoying because it takes me for ever to edit something or just type on the keyboard.
I have checked all of the settings to see how I can fix this but I don't think it's possible.
Will someone please respond and tell me if you have encountered the same issue?
I hope Apple fixes this because it makes the touch screen so dificult to use.
I hope people will respond to this comment.

I totally agree

Troy, you are right. This is definitely a bug which should be considered as critical. I used iOS 14 for only one evening and then decided to downgrade back to 13.7 until this is solved. Navigating web content has become nearly impossible on most pages, my feed reader for example, which is one of my mainly used apps, has become unusable. I will stay on iOS 13 until this is fixed.

I wonder if downgrading is still possible? If this were under serious I wouldn't of upgraded.

Yes, it should still be possible, however, you have to act quickly since Apple signs the older iOS version only for one week after the latest version has been released. Another problem is that you have to use iTunes to downgrade and that you need a iTunes backup which was created with the 13.7 release. Otherwise you would loose your data since the downgrade deletes any content from your device. I always backup my iPhone before upgrading to a new major version. I am not sure wether you can restore your data from iCloud, but with iTunes, if you have made a backup under iOS 14 it is NOT backward compatible and can not be restored when you have an older iOS version installed.

Severity rating now escalated

Since the public release of iOS 14 and iPadOS 14, it has become evident from people's experience that the scope of this behavior is broader than our testing had suggested, and there are situations where it can cause certain web pages or areas of an app to effectively be unusable with VoiceOver. Consequently, we have now revised our rating of this bug to “serious”. The site's Bug Tracker and our post detailing the new and fixed bugs in iOS 14 and iPadOS 14 have been updated accordingly.

Just wondering

I was having the issue with the cursor jumping around until I turned off the Voice Over Screen Recognition. Once I turned that off and rebooted the phone, I haven't had any problems. Are those that are having problems, are you using the Screen Recognition?

Does every iPhone support the screen recognition?

On my iPhone, I could not find the cporresponding options within the Voiceover settings screen. Since I am using an old iPhone SE I assumed that this feature is limited to newer device generations which have CPUs with machine learning capabilities.
However, I had the focussing problem without being able to activate the screen recognition, so therefore I suppose that it also occurs if it is turned off.
BTW: I couldn't find the backtap feature either on my phone. Maybe someone could tell me on which devices this is supported.

Has someone tried out whether the focussing bug has already been fixed with the new release?

Greetings, I really would love to see this bug squashed. The annoyance factor alone makes this a much higher priority to me. It bites me several times a day. Guess I need to just use my phone slower.

No, it hasn't. At least not with my 8+ It's anadoable if you feel around the screen and change the focus to somewhere else.
