Formatting information

By Devin Prater

3 years 5 months ago

Hi all. I'd love to see VoiceOver describe formatting information, and show it in braille using braille codes, not the inaccurate status cells. VoiceOver could also use speech, pitch, intonation, stuff like that to show formatting, like bold and italics. For blind people that say that we don't need all that sightie stuff, when an author writes something, isn't that important? Yes. Every little word is used for something. And, so is the presentation of the text. And, if you're in school, many textbooks bold the vocabulary words you're looking for to complete that "hunt the definitions" assignment. So, I think that we should be able to view that formatting. And yes, I've submitted feedback to Apple. If anyone else is with me and wants more than the blind status quo for reading text, mention "FB7725196."

Of course, this may be fixed in iOS14. It may be one of the reasons why they went with the Liblouis braille tables in the first place. At least I know they support formatting, as BrailleBlaster does great with it. As an aside, one can load BRF files into BARD Mobile, so if I can, I just convert EPUB books into BRF with Braille Blaster on the Mac and read them in BARD Mobile. Now Apple, you want everyone to use your Books app, right?

I'd also love it if Apple made some games. I know, it'd just be an Apple Arcade exclusive, but goodness I know at least Apple would try to make it accessible, unlike all other games on Apple Arcade. And no, Dear Reader isn't because having VOICEOVER announce text changes isn't accessibility, it's a workaround.

I agree with what the poster is saying 100%, formatting is required in books and Apple Books should be accessible.

Just eloquence.

I doubt many would argue this is not possible, but I don't think there is any harm in speaking your heart out:
I want eloquence voice....
Of course, my love with apple become even more stronger. :)
Any other member who wants, pl raise your voice, don't worry that it might realistic or not, its your wish. And wishes are most of the times are unrealistic but your passion make them realistic.

I would also like to see eloquence be an option for those that want it.

Formatting for Apple Books FB7725196

In reply to Formatting information by Devin Prater

Knowing the formatting is also crucial if you are in advertising/marketing. Additionally, having photos accessibly in Apple Books is necessary. Sometimes, you may not care to read the formatting, so there needs to be a way to quickly enable and disabled the speaking of formatting in the rotor. Photo accessibility includes speaking all aspects of an image, plus the ability to explore the photos and the positioning of the contents in a window. These capabilities are needed throughout the entire ecosystem.

Thanks Jeff, but...

Thanks for the suggestion Jeff. But VoiceOver is set to use the main language for the iPhone, which in my case is Swedish. So I guess the only way for me to change the default English accent is to change the language setting of my entire phone, which I probably won't do. Would just be easier to be able to have the option to change ones prefered default English accent/voice.

I think it would be good if we had the option to know formatting by sound rather than by voiceover saying stuff like "italic, highlighted, etc".

Disable rotor Braille language table

By Bruno Prieto

I would like to be able to hide the rotor option that allows you to change the braille tables, it does not allow you to disable it in the voiceover rotor settings

Eloquence

I would also like Eloquence's voice to be present on all devices with voiceover

Speech history review and copying

By Bruno Prieto

3 years 5 months ago

I would like that voiceover to have a history of the things it verbalized before, and to be able to copy those things it said. This is useful in case I didn't hear something it said and I want to quickly listen to it again, and copy that to the clipboard just like the command we already have available.

Speech history options

I would love this feature as well. There should also be options to clear it, import and export speech history.

Lol, holgers responses.

Hi.

Oh dear I just love how Holger is throwing a tamper tantrum around and doesn't know what he's talking about.

Firstly, general bugs that also plage the sighted comunity do not get fixed asap, if you would step out of your own bubble you would notice that there are long standing bugs and inconsistancies that Apple hasn't fixed till now.
Also, a bug free software doesn't exist, especially not such a complex software as an operating system, may it be on your phone or computer.

And you are not in a position to expect anything. You bought the device and expect it to work fluently. Good, it does, but you didn't buy iOS with it, Apple mererly granted you to use it as it's stated in the license agreements and terms of use.
And lastly, seriously, bring out the second class citizens card again? Ok, I'm out.

Greetings Moritz.

Regarding Eloquence

By mority

3 years 5 months ago

Hi.

I see the chance of Eloquence coming to iOS as quite slim. As far as i know Eloquence is a 32 bit based speach platform and hasn't been compiled to 64 bits. As well, Code Factory have a pritty strong hold on the licenses for the thing, so I don't think we will get Eloquence, or any other synthesizer for that matter on iOS.

I've used Apple products since January 2010. I started out with an iMac. I didn't get the iPhone 4 until December of 2010. I have 10 years of experience using Apple products, and 26 years of using Windows.

A couple more things I would

By cool cat

A couple more things I would like to add. 1. Be able to have multiple entries on the clipboard like you can with Windows 10. You can have up to 25 entries with Windows 10 clipboard. That would be very helpful. 2. Be able to pin emails to the top of your inbox in the IOS app.

announcing indentation

By Tangela

3 years 5 months ago

hi, worth noting that iOS does announce tab-based indentation when punctuation is set to full, but unfortunately not spaces. It also doesn't do this as elligantly as it could, for example it will say tab tab tab instead of 3 tab

TTS and indentation

By Devin Prater

3 years 5 months ago

If you're on a Mac, you can use Emacs with Emacspeak for indentation, follow this guide for setting it up, and if you run into problems just let me know. And yeah it's still a work in progress so if you have suggestions, send me those too.

For voices, yes, I don't know why they aren't continuing with the Alex style model, when the Siri voices are... less life-like and flexible than Alex.

As we continue, Can we keep it professional?

Keep it on point, keep it professional. I'd like to first, apologize to Apple and other readers, on behalf of Blind professionals for several posts above . Secondly, this post, is directed at whomever may read this. If we have the understanding that Apple may continue to review this forum, please use judgement when drafting and posting. IF we have something to say that is, off topic or lacks professionalism, please contact the said individual using a private communication method. I don't pretend to make rules around here, but some of the posts I've seen on this thread is nothing short of ridiculous.

In reply to VO audio routing by Geoff

Jeff, Thanks for your reply. It seams to depend on the individual BT speaker which you have connected to your device. I am not sure of the technical BT details of the codec that works or doesn't work. Yes, if a speaker allows for VO speach to be routed through the handset, you are able to use the audio destination within the router to switch from the handset to the speaker with VO speach.

Saving VoiceOver settings in iCloud

By Orlando

3 years 4 months ago

It would be nice if I could save my voice over settings in my iCloud account. I’ve recently had to reset my device and had to go back in and set my settings all over. And I know that I missed resetting a few things. It would also be nice to apply those VoiceOver settings to any other iOS or iPadOS devices that I have. Just by signing into my iCloud account.

It would be nice if BSI didn't display the text being typed when on screen away mode. at least, if there were an option to turn it off.

No new voices. If you have an app that is not label approprilycorrectly, VO will be able to label them. Mostly accessibility is more on hearing.

Accessibility of Apps

Most apps on the app store are not accessible. While I know this is not an actual IOS issue, it should be something Apple addresses. They should focus more on making third-party apps accessible.b

It isn't Apple's choice

By Wayne Scott Jr

3 years 4 months ago

I was told by Apple several years ago that for third-party apps, it is their choice, not Apple's to make their apps accessible. A lot have chosen not to. It's a matter of contacting that developper and asking them to make the app accessible. Apple does ajob of making their own apps accessible. I applaud those developers who have chosen to make their apps accessible. We live ghted will. The world doesn’t evolve. us. It’s how you os
to respond. you can ose to be tter or better. I se to be etter. si
