Why I Upgraded to the iPhone 7, Even Without the Headphone Jack

Posted on Monday, September 26, 2016 by Darrell Hilliker

I considered skipping this iPhone due to the disappearance of the headphone jack, for about one second, then I moved back into reality and took the plunge. Why?

The iPhone 7 is much more than just a missing headphone jack, even for those of us in the connected, online blind community.

Image stabilization on the camera, now in both iPhone models, means it should be easier to receive remote sighted assistance through apps like BeSpecular…

Apart from the new name for this version (Sierra), you'll notice that Apple has re-branded the entire line of the Mac's operating system. No longer is it OS X; it's macOS, to line up with tvOS, watchOS, and iOS. As always, this is a free upgrade, available to anyone with a supported Mac. And, again as always, we urge you to back up important files before upgrading, just in case.

Sleeping With The Stars: Old Time Radio and my iPhone

Posted on Wednesday, September 14, 2016 by Morgan Watkins

In October of 1999, during a business trip to California, I had the opportunity to attend an exclusive private party on the retired luxury liner, the RMS Queen Mary. The former flagship of the White Star Line was reserved for this one very raucous bash. For me, parties usually involved two or three old friends and a single bottle of good wine. However, this was a fancy-pants event and because I am a plain old vanilla guy, I was now in way over my head.

My guide dog and I boarded the…

Another fall is upon us, which means football season has started, temperatures are starting to drop, and that a new version of iOS is coming out. Another seemingly established tradition is that another article discussing the new accessibility features is in order. Posted on Tuesday, September 13, 2016 by AppleVis

Detailed in this post are possible accessibility-related bugs that members of the AppleVis Editorial Team have identified during their testing of iOS 10.

As is now our routine practice, the bugs have been grouped based upon what we believe to be there likely level of impact to the user experience to those affected by each bug. Back to School with iOS

Posted on Friday, September 9, 2016 by Niall Gallagher

In this post I would like to discuss my experience of recently beginning an online course of study. Before beginning this course, I had heard about online courses, but I had never explored the area.

Signing Up

In my case, signing up to an online course was as straight forward as completing any online purchase. It was just a case of providing my personal details and payment information.

I completed the sign-up process on my iPhone in a matter of minutes. Soon…

AppleVis Launches New App Directory for Sharing Information on the Accessibility of Apple TV Apps

Posted on Tuesday, September 6, 2016 by AppleVis

We are pleased to announce the launch of an Apple TV App Directory to enable members of our community to share information about the accessibility of tvOS apps to blind and low vision users.

Since the launch of the Fourth-Generation Apple TV, it has been our desire to add an Apple TV App Directory to the AppleVis website. However, we delayed doing so in the hope that Apple would introduce a web-based interface for its Apple TV App Store, as not having this presents a number of issues…

Smart Home Management: an Idea for an Accessible Control Panel

Posted on Tuesday, August 30, 2016 by Mike Taylor

Over recent years we have become more aware of smart homes, and what could be perceived as the good, bad and the ugly when we think about security and accessibility. While I have heard positive things (to some degree) about the accessibility of specific apps, accessibility as well as making connected home devices as secure as possible is still something which is still in development. What follows is my attempt at what an accessible user interface would look like, and how it would function…

Smarty Pants: The iPhone in Your Pocket May be Brighter Than you Think

Posted on Wednesday, August 24, 2016 by Morgan Watkins

I was so naive. I used to equate artificial intelligence with politicians. I believed that computing devices were, at best, simple automatons. Perhaps I got the definitions switched. Or patently wrong. Today, as I observe people and watch how they interact with their iPhones, I see an unprecedented synergy and I wonder if we are beginning to meld with our new technologies. It's a thought.

Ever since the days of the ENIAC computer, with its thousands of vacuum tubes, we have been…
