Description of App

Dragon Dictation is an easy-to-use voice recognition application powered by Dragon® NaturallySpeaking® that allows you to easily speak and instantly see your text or email messages. In fact, it’s up to five (5) times faster than typing on the keyboard.

With Dragon Dictation you can also dictate status updates directly to your Social Networking applications (Facebook and Twitter) or send notes and reminders to yourself….all using your voice. So when you’re on-the-go, stop typing and start speaking – from short text messages to longer email messages, and anything in between.

Dragon Dictation supports a multitude of global languages. For a full list of currently supported languages visit www.dragonmobileapps.com.

REVIEWS

Press Reviews:

David Pogue - The New York Times : “I’m finding Dragon to be a much faster, more efficient way to spit out e-mail messages, notes, text messages and Twitter updates. It’s really, really cool.”

Mel Martin - TUAW.com: “Put this into the ‘I didn’t think they could ever get this to work on an iPhone’ category. I’m talking about Dragon Dictation from Nuance, the developers of the very popular Dragon Naturally Speaking for the PC.”

Arik Hesseldahl – BusinessWeek: “For the last few days I’ve been trying two Nuance iPhone apps, Dragon Dictation and Dragon Search on my iPhone. And while they’re not the first voice search or dictation apps for the iPhone, I certainly like the results I’ve been getting.”

iTunes Reviews:

Miker55 – “It’s understood everything I’ve said. I can’t tell you how many times I’ve been driving and wanted to text someone but couldn’t. This app is great!!!”

Twebs – “For me Dragon dictation is a game changing application. The accuracy is outstanding and it’s very easy to use. I immediately notified everyone I know with an iPhone to pick up this application while it’s still free.”

Redman042 – “I can’t believe my iPhone can do this. Accuracy is amazingly good and transcription is very fast. You can’t even tell that transcription is being done online. I’m very very impressed.”

#1 New Features and Power of Advocacy

Submitted by kevinchao89 on 5 September 2010.

Version 2.0 brought tighter integration with iOS and additional services. It's possible to dictate a text message, email, tweet, FaceBook status update; no more need to copy and paste, it will go directly into the respect fields or post them automatically, no need to copy and paste. With the better integration, Nuance broke accessibility with VoiceOver, where all buttons were unlabeled. However, through the power of twitter, email and other communication channels; Nuance has made version 2.0.1 accessible. These companies for the most part don't intend to exclude blind users from using their apps/products and don't know if it's not working until they know about it. So, let them know and let it be heard, and it will be accessible.

#2 From an accessibility perspective

Submitted by Tyler Juranek on 4 January 2011.

From an accessibility perspective, this app is 99.9 percent accessible! I found the app itself verry easy to configgure, witch includes setting up social networking, your language, and other things.

I find it verry easy to send out tweets and facebook updates with Dragon, however, I haven't tried mail.
The cool thing about the updating of social networks, is that it updates right from the app, not opening the browser, or any other application.

You can also copy the text to the clipboard, for pasting in skype text chat, web forms, Etc, Etc.

And, best of all, it doesn't cost a cent!

#3 Currently 7 languages supported in version 2.0.8

Submitted by Esther on 24 April 2011.

Dragon Dictation currently supports English (as spoken in the United States, United Kingdom, and Australia), German (Europe), French (Europe and Canada), Spanish (Europe and United States), Italian (Europe), Japanese, and Mandarin Chinese (Simplified Characters) for a total of 11 possible selections for "Language" under Dragon Dictation's "Settings" menu. I've found that the new language options do not show up in the Settings menu if I simply update the app, but only when I switch the default voice to a new (supported) language that was not in my previous settings options. It may also be possible to get the new language options if you delete the app and download it again from the App Store, but then you'll lose the training adjustments to your voice.

Dragon Dictation now relays your dictated speech for transcription in chunks of up to 60 seconds (up from the 30 seconds maximum when the original entry for this app was posted.) An iPad-only feature to store previous dictated text as notes was recently added. The best source of information about additional languages and country App stores carrying Dragon Dictation is the blog site link that can be accessed from the support site link given in the "More Information on app" category. Currently, Dragon Dictation is available from app stores in the U.S., Canada, U.K., Germany, France, Italy, Spain, Australia, Japan, Austria, Switzerland, and China.

#5 Latest Version almost unusable

Submitted by James Dean on 8 November 2011.

I just updated Dragon Dictation today. I am running IOS 5.0 on an iPhone 4. When I open the app, it literally takes 30 seconds after I press the "tap and dictate" button to respond, completely locking up the phone until this time has passed. Not an improvement at all, if you ask me.

#6 latest version only accessible by turning VoiceOver off

Submitted by Rocco on 17 December 2011.

I've had the same issue, and the last update didn't fix this issue either. Even after thirty seconds, my phone is still locked. The only way I've found to fix this is by turning VoiceOver completely off, and just tapping in the middle of the screen. Once you're done talking, tap in the bottum right-hand corner of the screen, and turn VoiceOver back on. You can then use the app normally again. That's the only work-around I've been able to figure out so far...

#9 Not Accessible for Me

Submitted by AnonyMouse on 12 April 2012.
Member of the AppleVis Editorial Team

Since the last update and running it on 5.1 on my iPhone 4. It is completely inaccessible for me. Just hangs there and nothing happens at all. I just have to kill the app to make anything work again. It has really reversed it's gears in being accessible.

#10 Version: 2.0.20 is out!

Submitted by AnonyMouse on 19 April 2012.
Member of the AppleVis Editorial Team

As of Version: 2.0.20 is now completely reversed everything! Everything now works great with no problems at all! All of the lag or hang up have disappeared in this version. They have listened and responded with this wonderful new update.

It has been so long since I had a working copy of the Dragon Dictation that I almost have forgotten what you can do with this app. It has many of the features you can find in the Voice Dictation and Voice Assistant. It still lack in a few area but for being FREE and you don't want to shell out money for the other two apps. This is your next best choice. The interface is not nearly as friendly but it is workable.

#11 inaccessible? kill the app to

Submitted by talksina on 20 April 2012.

inaccessible? kill the app to make everything work again?
Well,
I was very frightened during 2.0.18 dragon dictation update, as I found the screen completely silent.
Try, try and try, at the end I found the solution for that issue:
turn music on and off!
When you double-tap the screen with 2 fingers, the same gesture used to answer/hang up a call, music starts, it's the music play/pause functionality from everywhere on the phone.
Of course music annoys when it's on and you want to use dragon, so... turn it off again with same gesture and dragon started working!
But, at the end, from 2.0.20 the problem is solved. so, thanks Nuance.
