Timing Workouts

By Mark P, 12 October, 2019

watchOS and Apple Watch Apps

I’ve just got my first iWatch. It’s  a series 5. I’m an experienced IPhone user so know my way around using VoiceOver. However, one function of the iWatch has me flummoxed. I got it mainly for the Gym, but I can’t move the time I wish to do in the workout app. It says sweep up or down with one finger to adjust the time. This doesn’t work. Well, I can’t get it to work. What am I doing wrong?

It's a bug

This is something that was just recently broken with Watch OS 6. Normally swiping up and down changes the time in 5-minute steps. For the moment, what you can do is when you're focused on the time control, turn the crown to change it. VoiceOver won't tell you the new time when you adjust it so you have to flick away from the control and back to hear the new value. You can also ask Siri to set the time for you when you start the workout, IE by saying start an in-door run workout for 20 minutes.

Thankfully, this setting is remembered, so once you set a goal and want to keep reusing it you shouldn't have to fiddle with the option

Set time with the crown

Hello, as the previous poster said, you'll have to adjust the workout goal time with the crown. That said, if the crown does not work to set the time, do a 2 finger triple tap on the watch and try again. This triple tap with 2 fingers gesture toggles a feature called digital crown navigation. If the feature is on, the crown moves voiceover as would a left or right swipe, so for the crown to interact with the time slider, it has to be off. I have reported this bug to apple accessibility and they say they're working on it. If it bothers you, you should put in an email to accessibility@apple.com and report it. The more people who report these things, the more likely it is to get fixed in a timely manner. Hope this helps.

Continued problems with activity app

Thanks for the information on the bug in Watch OS6 that doesn't let you change time for workouts. Unfortunately, all the other parameters are broken as well. For example, I can no longer change my walk from one mile to two or from 2 to 2.5. Is there any information on when this bug will be fixed? This is making my workouts less fun and harder to manage.

Does anybody know how to set the resting period in the above mentioned workout? It starts a timer but I don’t know how to mark each interval
