I hope someone can help me because I’m deciding whether to give my new earbuds a chance or request a return on Amazon.
For the past four years, I’ve been using the Huawei FreeBuds 4 and I still think they’re amazing for what I need. Decent sound, also a decent microphone, semi-open earbud design, and customizable gestures—including volume up and down on the earbuds themselves, which is essential for me. The thing is, my earbuds are starting to fail in terms of battery life, and I was waiting for the FreeBuds 6 to be released.
So, I just bought the FreeBuds 6 and I’ve run into several issues with them, but I’m not sure how to tell if it’s just my particular pair or if this is how the new model performs in general.
First of all, when testing the microphones using the Voice Notes app, the mic quality on the FreeBuds 6 is terrible. It sounds like it isolates all surrounding noise, and as a result, the recording quality suffers—it sounds like there’s a piece of cloth covering the mics. When I compare it with recordings made using the FreeBuds 4, those sound wonderful; they don’t isolate ambient noise, but the recording fidelity is very clear and crisp.
The other issue I’m having with the FreeBuds 6 is that the sound equalization is very unstable. I’ve set the EQ to my liking, with strong bass, but if I stop playing music and VoiceOver isn’t speaking, after about 10 seconds, when I touch the screen again and VoiceOver starts talking or music resumes, the first 3 seconds sound totally flat with no bass, and then the EQ gradually returns to my custom setting. Sometimes I also feel like VoiceOver’s voice sounds tinny, and I don’t know what to think—whether it’s the current Huawei firmware or my particular pair of earbuds that are defective.
I really hope someone who owns them can tell me if they’ve had the same problems or not, so I can figure out if mine are faulty.
Just for the record, Im using the buds with an iPhone 15 pro.
