Hi all.
So on a fairly recent Double Tap podcast, a recommendation was made to get an HDMI adapter, one of those thingies that makes the Mac think you have a monitor. My Mac Mini M2 has been running fine, so far as i can tell, but I found articles like this.

I bought one for like seven bucks, so I figure, hey, if it doesn't really do much, maybe I can use it if I do video stuff later. So what is it supposed to do, exactly? The big thing seems to be solving "X not responding". I get that occasionally, in particular when I load Ableton Live. I just tried that, and I still got it, maybe it was shorter, but I'm honestly not sure.
So I'm just curious, what should I be looking out for, to see if this thing has made any changes to my Mac experience? I'm fine if it does nothing, I assume I'll use it for something or other, I mean, they sell these generally and it can't just be to solve all kinds of screen reader issues for the Mac. So I imagine it will come in handy somehow or other, and if it doesn't, well, seven bucks isn't a great loss.
But I mean, I was under the impression you didn't really need these anymore, but the podcast was from this May, IIRC. so I figured, what the hell, not much money, I'll take a chance and see if it does anything. But then I realized, I really have no idea why these get recommended.
I was under the impression that, in the days of yore, a Mac Mini wouldn't run headless, so you needed one of these to get it working that way, and that's not true anymore. So now I'm just really curious.
In case it matters, the Mac now thinks I have 4k60-1080@240 1920 × 1080 for a display. High dynamic range is off. Basically it has whatever the defaults are, I plugged the adapter in and went to check system settings, because the article suggested I might need to change displays, nope, this was just selected. I haven't looked at the advanced settings yet. SO if it helps to change anything, do let me know.
