The Mac already has VoiceOver

The Mac already has VoiceOver which is a built in screen reader. When you press any key on the keyboard VoiceOver will say the name of that key. VoiceOver will also tell you what's happening on your Mac. I think the Mac comes with OSX El Capitain.

You can go to the BookShare website and enable the web reader to read BookShare books on the mac. If you don't wish to remain in the browser window to read, you can copy and paste your book into Text Edit or some other wordprocessor.

Another way to read Bookstore books

you can download the daisy format from Bookshare (with or without images) and after unzipping the files (automatically done on the Mac), open the .xml file in Safari. You can then read it like you would any web content. I haven't tried this on other browsers.
Hope this helps,
