Voiceover and repeated characters

Would anybody happen to know whether there's a setting I can adjust to change the way Voiceover handles repeated symbols and characters? For instance, typing *** at the moment gives a readout as "star star star", but it would be nice if this could be spoken as "3 stars" instead.

glad it worked. I've been a Mac user since 2009, and every year, theirs new things to learn as major versions are released. I am a public beta tester, and usually I know most if not all changes by the public releases.
