Question about audio controls in iMovie projects

Hello all, I'm starting out with iMovie and at first it seemed simple enough: add photos,/vids/music. However, now that I'm getting closer to the end-result I'm running into a problem:
In the main window there are checkboxes that apparently are for volume and equalization and the help tag says to double tap on them to check or uncheck the boxes, however, when you tap on them nothing changes. What I'm really trying to do is lower the volume of the background music however nothing I have tried has seemed to do the trick. I did somehow check the equalization box but I have no idea how I did it and cannot seem to do it again.
TL;DR: how on earth do you change the volume of background music in iMovie?
Thanks,
Dan.
