A problem with some web forms on the Mac

Hello Apple Vis,
I had a question to ask. I've been needing to contact a couple of companies via a ticket submission. IN the form. I see a Dash and a downwards pointing triangle.
More often than not these are where the categories are.
Is there a way to make voiceOver handle these better?
I don't see why they use the Pop UP buttons as those seem to be handled much easily with VoiceOver.
