NVDA in Crossover, how do you do it?

Hi all.

So I have a Windows VM, but I kind of feel like maybe it's overkill. So let's say I wanted to run MushClient to play Alter Aeon. Obviously, I'd need NVDA. Possibly a synthesizer as well, unless SAPI is already working.

Suppose I download the free two week trial of Crossover. Can I set this up? I assume if I can that would work for any other game as well. I swear I saw somebody mention this once, but I don't know if they gave any specifics. Anybody have a set of steps? Anybody using Crossover or similar and feel like telling us what you're doing with it, and how you're doing it?

Alternatively I looked at this, but it seems fairly old.

Obviously I can just keep using the VM, and I might. But I figure if there are viable alternatives, I should at least look into them. I'm not doing much with Windows except audio games, and aside from needing NVDA, they really don't seem like they should be that complicated. I'm not running any heavy mainstream games or anything like that.

I mean, I can see it having issues too, e.g. if NVDA doesn't save settings like speech rate or such because it can't write to files. But That's why we try things, after all.

There are too many dependencies lacking in the wine build that crossover uses. I was trying to get any speech working with Diablo IV on my mac the other week with no joy.

Your options are, as a screenreader user:

Use a VM for light games.
Use cloud gaming such as Ge Force Now with games that have accessibility built in.
Use something like Shadow PC (this is what I do) to play PC games with a full graphics card and ability to use mods to make games like Stardew Valley, Fallout 4 etc playable.

the mac is flaky to game on for sighted people. It's even flakier for us. It's been something I've been working on a lot for the last year or so to try and get a good set up. Shadow PC was the best I could get, though it's not without issues.

That they actually did it. I'm doing simple audio games, not mainstream stuff like Diablo. But I guess I'll stick with the VM then. It seems to work well enough. I just feel like it's a bit of overkill. But if we can't get speech with things like Crossover, then obviously not and that's what we need.

I think the most mainstream stuff I run is Dawncaster, works on the Mac, and Slay the Spire, doesn't. But my Mac doesn't have enough memory to run it in a VM until I upgrade. Then I'll also get STS 2, because there's a mod for that too. I'm not really interested in many mainstream games, hence wondering if something like Crossover would work.

You'll need to set up nvda the way you like it and export it to a portable copy, once you have that, just put it in you're bottles c drive and launch nvda.exe from the run command option in crossover, then launch your game. I've tested it with espeak and a game that used libraries for text rather than the native ui so Your milage will vary.
