Looking for a decent graphics editor / image manipulation utility for OS X

Recently performed a clean install of El Capitan and thought I'd take the opportunity to find a decent alternative to Adobe Fireworks.

I prefer something minimalist, native, free and accessible. While I prefer native apps, I have been using Adobe CS 5 for years now relying on redundant versions of Java 6, so I'm open to the idea I guess.

The goal is basic vector graphic design like logos, page headers etc. - no photography. So something lightweight will be ideal.

I've tried out GIMP but it's useless, VoiceOver isn't there whatsoever, and nearly everything else I've searched for is either out-of-date, pricey or Adobe.
