How do I accomplish the following with Voiceover on the Mac OS X?

Hello all:
How do I do the following with Voiceover:
1) Find the length of a line of text from the left margin in TextEdit
2) Perform contiguous selection of items in a table, list , etc. without the repeated VO+Cmd+Enter
