A couple of questions regarding OS X Yosemite
I've finally got round to updating my Mac to OS X Yosemite! So far it seems great but I just wondered if anyone else is having these issues.
1. I seem to have no VO on the login screen. When pressing CMD +F5 to get VoiceOver on, I just get a beep. There are a few different beeps at different times throughout the login screen. The first time it did this, I thought it might have been something to do with that it had only just installed the update and a sighted person logged in for me. Today I couldn't get sighted help and managed to login eventually but can't remember how lol.
2. Is Google Chrome now inaccessible? Since updating, everything in the HTML part says "empty HTML content" when using Chrome. Safari still works fine though.
I'm not that bothered about the google Chrome thing, but if someone could tell me how to either get VO on the login screen or how to use it without VO that would be great.
In the log in screen first type you're name and then press enter.
Then type you're password and then press enter then you should be loved in to you're mac.
From the discussion in another topic, it sounds like VoiceOver speech is unavailable at the login screen if File Vault is turned on. I do not use File Vault, and I get VoiceOver speech just fine at the login window.
I can't speak for Chrome because I don't use it.
As another user said, File Vault will cause this. The good news is that this tool has become more accessible, by beeping instead of remaining silent. One beep means that you are to type your username and two beeps means it wants your password. I don't use File Vault either, so this information comes from an email list and may not be completely accurate, but the bottom line is that the tones mean the Mac is waiting for your login details, even if I may have the exact pattern wrong.
Do you know where to turn off File Vault in the system settings? Thanks.
As the subject says, go to System Preferences, choose Security, and then the File Vault tab. All the onctrols are in there. Remember that, if everything is dimmed, you'll need to find the lock button, click it, and enter your Mac's administrator account password.
I had file vauld enabled, and it gave me a lot of trouble. I couldn't use speech on the log in screen, so I didn't know what to do. I clicked around randomly and I came in a kind of recover mode or something, and somehow I managed to log in again. So I would advise anyone to turn filevauld of.
Thanks everyone. Disabling File Vault has fixed the speech problem. As for Chrome I think it is now inaccessible until Google bring an update out for it.
Depending on you security conscious you are, it may be a good idea to use File Vault and learn how to use the login screen with it enabled. From all I've read, logging in should be easy once you understand how it works, so you don't need to rely on speech feedback. I wouldn't stay away from using File Vault just because of login problems, if you can overcome them.
I don't use File Vault, but that's because I have a Mac mini, not a laptop. If I had a laptop, I would definitely have the feature enabled, because it's easy to lose a laptop or have it stolen. That is the purpose of File Vault, to make it virtually impossible for an unauthorized user to obtain the contents of the computer.
If you have a desktop, which is far less likely to be stolen, then the advantage of File Vault is much less.
Those are just my thoughts. I won't judge anyone here based on their decision whether or not to use the feature.
What exactly is this File Vault thing? I know it's a security feature, but what does it actually do apart from preventing speech on the log on screen? I've never heard of it until now.
I've been trying to get VoiceOver working and it appears to be broken for both Firefox and Chrome on Yosemite. I get the the "Content is empty" error for almost all web pages. Some pages, however, work ok. For example, gmail on Chrome. And Safari seems to work fine.
Hi all. After giving it some thought and reading Janet Ingber's well-written article in this month's "AccessWorld," I've decided to upgrade to Yosemite. But first I have a question about email. In this entry Apple's notes say that the problem of some email messages not being sent properly with some services has been fixed. But does the problem of some messages not deleting properly still exist, or has that been fixed too? I currently have about 500 or so messages in my inbox alone, that I know for a fact I've read. I suppose I could just find out for myself, but has anyone else run into this with Yosemite?
I've not come across any bug that stops messages from being deleted before, but haven't seen anything about it on here so I'm assuming it's been fixed.
The mail app for me is 1 of those things I've never had any trouble but everyone else seems to do at times :)
