VoiceOver unresponsive when on FaceTime calls on iPod touch 6th generation IOS 11.2.1

When on a FaceTime audio or video call, VoiceOver is unresponsive. It doesnt respond when I move my finger around the screen. When I press the home button, it makes the bleep sound but there is no speech. Has anyone else experienced this? If so, has anyone found any solutions?

Has anyone been able to figure this out? I haven’t tried this, but maybe I have to use headphones? It seems I’m the only one experiencing this bug????
