Hi. I have an iPhone 12, latest update of the OS. I don't know if I accidentally turned something off, but when I'm texting someone, I hear the sound the phone makes that indicates that a message is coming in, but VoiceOver is not speaking the messages while focus is in the text field. I have to look backward to read the messages. What can I do to figure out the issue?

As the subject says, I've seen this too, and not just in iMessage. I've noticed it in WhatsApp as well. I'd also like a fix for this if one exists, since I've no idea what's going on and don't know if I broke something.
Try this
Go to settings, accessibility, VoiceOver, rotor.
Go to rotor items, then make sure toggle live regions and announcements is selected.
Next go to messages.
On your list of messages, access the rotor until you have live regions and announcements highlighted. It should be on. If not, swipe up or down until it's on. You should now be hearing your messages as they come in.
If it is already on, swipe it off, close messages, reopen messages, re-access the rotor, and turn live regions and announcements back on.

I have tried it, but it didn’t work for me. It’s still not reading my messages as they come in.
Re: incoming texts
When you refer to incoming texts, are you within that particular chat? Are you just inside of messages? Or are you referring to anywhere within iOS?
For example, say you're on Safari, checking out the AppleVis website, and you receive a text, does VoiceOver read aloud that text to you then?
Same question, but when you are within the messages app. Looking at your list of conversations from various people, if somebody, anybody, send you a text, does VoiceOver read it aloud then?
Finally, when you are in any given conversation, and you receive a text from that conversation, does VoiceOver read out the text?
What? I thought live region…
What? I thought live region is, and must be, only a web thing. I thought someone would rather suggest to enable notification announcements?
