VoiceOver on Kindle is wrecked since update

By Abz, 28 December, 2019

iOS and iPadOS

I am using an iPhone 6s plus, my software version is 13.3. I turn on VoiceOver (Accessability / VoiceOver on) and open a book in Kindle, then swipe down with two fingers for continuous reading. Until the last two upgrades voiceover would read the book to me correctly except for some odd pronunciations.

Now VoiceOver begins reading correctly, sometimes for a whole page, but soon after begins speaking in gobbledygook. It starts saying numbers and symbols that aren’t there and saying words that aren’t there or saying them out of order. VoiceOver will then read correctly for a little while and then glitch again. Also it starts spouting total non-words, for a whole paragraph or more. These glitches happen every time I use VoiceOver to read in Kindle.

I can’t be the only one with this very frustrating problem. Does anyone have a fix or workaround for this?

Try the same books on Kindle for PC.

Many of Amazon's older kindle books are pictures of pages with text generated through optical character recognition. This recognition often hasn't been edited by a human, that would cost money. You can return a book with this defect.

Kindle VoiceOver wrecked by update

The problem occurs with all books (more than 10 per week, mostly new) and never happened before the update. I did not update my iPad because of this problem and the iPad reads them just fine. Now I am concerned that I should update but if I do my Kindle books will not read correctly. I guess I will have to take my iPad with me wherever I go and never update. For people with only one device this is a bigger problem. A PC or laptop is not as mobile. Can’t use them just anywhere but better that than no reading at all.

I have over 2000 Kindle books and have had no problems for quite some time now. I can navigate and read books continuously with no difficulties. There have been times when an update to Kindle has broken this but they've typically been addressed quickly once Kindle app developers have been made aware of issues with VoiceOver. This is interesting. I suspect that perhaps it might have to do with your model of iPHONE wich is I believe the oldest kind which can accept iOS13. Hopefully, others who have this issue will come forward and we can perhaps nail down the cause.

I’m having no issues on my 11. I’m on latest beta, but was on latest GM for about a week. I’d try to deregister and log back in.
