turning off ringing and message sounds without turning off all apps that obeys mute switch

I have an iPhone. I have been making different vibrations on my contacts and wonder if,it is just possible to,block ringing and Notification sounds;? I don't want the ringing sound and,, I,cannot seem to turn of text oo calls.

Can you just turn the ring volume down and then you won't hear it? I'm a bit confused as to what you want here.
