Speak AutoText turning off

By Zuhair Mahmoud, 6 September, 2023

iOS and iPadOS

Hi,

I did a quick search before posting this message and noticed that a few people already posted about this issue, and that the near consensus has been that it is resolved by doing a complete settings reset, which has also been my experience. This happens to me whenever I restore from iCloud, whether on the same phone or on a new phone entirely. It has persisted across devices, and I think it started with either iOS 14 or 15. Has anyone found a different solution?
For those who may not be familiar with the issue, if you turn on Speak AutoText under Accessibility / Spoken Text / Typing Feedback in order to hear autocorrect read out to you while you type on the touch keyboard, it will ultimately randomly turn itself off after a while for no apparent reason. I suspect many people, especially Bluetooth or braille display users, do not enable this setting (it is disabled by default), as it may more chatter than necessary, but it is a life saver for touch keyboard users.

Thanks,
Zuhair.

I have been having the same problem for ages now but not found a fix unfortunately. I did contact Apple accessibility but there is still no fix that I am aware of

Reset all settings will fix it

Sorry to hear you are having the same problem. Resetting all settings will definitely fix it … until the next time you have to do a restore, that is. Of course that means you have to reconfigure your phone back to what you want and give each application the necessary permissions as though you’ve just installed it. Let’s hope it’ll be fixed in iOS 17.

What if?

I am not using this voiceover function so I have no idea what I’m talking about.
Nevertheless, if I had this problem, I would disable the function in question before I did a restore, and enable it back again when I was done.
In all probability I am talking nonsense, however I wrote my nonsense down in case of the slight possibility that it works.
