Siri doesn't speak when called via the side button or the listen button

iOS and iPadOS

I'm currently on an iPhone 11 running iOS 14.2. What I thought was a server-side error turns out to be local. If I call up Siri with my voice, everything works as expected. Siri gives voice feedback, and all is well. If I call her up by long pressing the side button, there is no voice feedback at all. Similarly, if I activate the listen button after bringing up Siri, she won't reply with her voice. She functions properly, but she simply doesn't talk. It doesn't matter how I first called her up. Saying "Hey Siri" is the only way to make her use voice feedback when she responds. Anybody know how to fix this?

Interesting. My Siri is doing the opposite.

When I use Hey Siri, Siri doesn't talk. I was thinking about setting up Hey Siri again, but it doesn't sound like it'll help.

Hi Pepper Fox, Have you checked your Sirie settings? I'm guessing that you have but wanted to make sure. Also, I wonder if re-starting your phone would help? Just my thoughts.

Siri will speak when called via the side button or listen button if, and only if, silent mode is off. As an Apple Watch user who keeps their phone on silent 99% of the time, this is obscenely irritating. To change this behavior, go to settings>accessibility>Siri and set "voice feedback" to "always speak responses". Seems like that should be automatically changed when Voiceover is on, but hey, maybe I'm in the minority.

I don't know why they changed it, it was set to always on before iOS 14 came along.

Mine's been set to always since it was available. It's working better now, but it's still pretty slow, so mostly I use my new Google Home Mini if I need a quick response.
