I'm trying to figure out the RSS feed thing and I want to start getting this sites feeds but I'm confused. I downloaded a few apps but when I click on a link on the AppleVis rss page all I get is a error saying do I want to search for a rss app in the AppStore. Can anyone talk me through this?

The exact process will vary depending upon the RSS reader that you are using. But, essentially it will involve copying the desired url of the RSS feed that you want to follow and then using this in the manage and add feeds area of your chosen app.
