Facebook iOS app notifications totally broken for whatever bizarre reason

iOS & iPadOS

OK, this is really strange. All of a sudden, I seem to have completely lost Facebook notification sounds. If I use Siri, I do hear the swoosh sound, but otherwise, I get nothing. For instance, I wrote something on my wall earlier. I've been getting comments left and right. I know I have, as my phone's been sitting on the desk right here in front of me, and I heard Voiceover speak when the screen unlocked due to the push notification of a new comment. This however said, I don't get the tri-tone sound, nor do I get any other sound at all. Come to think of it, I don't even get any vibration alerts either from Facebook. This is driving me absolutely crazy! I'm a very! advanced I O S user, and you'd think that there wouldn't be anything I've missed. Pretty much, the only thing I've not done is to uninstall, and reinstall the app. That's probably gonna be the next thing on my checklist to try, unless you guys have any other ideas. Here's what I've tried so far. Actually, before I get to that though, come to think of it, I don't know that reinstalling would help, as now that I think of it, I'm having the exact same problem on my IPad, as well as on my IPhone. So it's not apparently installation specific. Anyhow, here's what I've so far done to trouble shoot this. 1. Make absolutely sure I'm not on silent/vibrate mode, and I'm not. 2. reboot the device. 3. Press home and sleep for several seconds and let the phone hard reset. 4. Close the app from the app switcher, and relaunch it. No good. 5. Clear all FB notifications from Notification center just in case something's hung up. NO good. 6. Made sure sounds were enabled for FB alerts, and they are. 7. Make sure vibrate alerts are enabled for FB, and they are. 8. Make sure push notifications for comments are enabled. They definitely are. 9. Make sure Facebook is set to sounds on, and it is. 10. toggle the sound settings off then back on to refresh things. 11. Plug in headphones to see if the sound mysteriously is getting routed through there even though nothing's plugged in. Not the case. 12. Make sure Facebook is set to show on the notification center, and the lock screen. It is. 13. Read the compatibility notes on the app store page to be sure I O S 7.1 is supported. Though it doesn't directly say it is, it doesn't directly say it's not either. 14. Made sure the Facebook app is set to sounds, alerts, bannars. It was. 15. Enable badges for the Facebook app. I know this shouldn't make a difference, but I did so anyway, just in case. 16. Made sure there was no update to the app that needed to be installed. There definitely isn't. So, yeah, on I O S 7.1. I don't think however this worked in 7.0 either. I kind a remember them being broken there too, although I didn't use the app much until very very recently, so at that time, I honestly didn't really think about it to much, nor really care too much about it. I hate to think I'm gonna have to get a different FB app, but if I can't have audible alert tones for my notifications, then I'm sorry, but that's a dealbreaker. And, quite a big one, if I may say myself. Any thoughts?

I haven't been able to get FB notifications to work since mid-January or so. The badge shows up on the app, but there is no push to speak of, even after attempting to toggle the settings multiple times.

I do get the notifications, but there's no accompanying notification sounds.

They're working fine for me, but the sounds stopped for me right around mid february or so. I wonder if fb are trying to fix something and broke something instead.

I say, well, I guess, as at least it's not just me going coocoo in the head. I was like, "Dang! What on earth 'em I missing!" Do you all know if there's anyone we can contact to report the bug? - As if they'd listen? I hear they usually don't. Anyway, I'll leave that comment hushed as I can't say yea or nay to that.

Um, I haven't had these sounds on any of my iOS devices for a couple of years now I'd say! Annoying but nothing you can do it seems.

I never have gotten FB notification sounds except when posting from Siri. I was thinking that was by design. Guess not. By the way, this is on two phones. Cherokee

The sounds on my notifications had been broken for about a year. I contacted FB accessibility about it and they told me to try this and it worked. 1. Open Facebook and tap on more in the bottom right. 2. Navigate to settings. 3. Navigate to push notifications. At the very top of this window, there is an option for “sound for push notifications”, then whatever yours is set to. 4. Tap on the edit link above this and toggle the settings. Even if it is set to what you want it as, just try putting it on the other setting then back to what it was on before. This should fix it. If that doesn’t work, try my guide for Facebook text message notifications: http://www.applevis.com/guides/ios/get-accessible-facebook-and-notifications-your-iphone-no-app Hope this helps.

This is an interesting thread to read. When I was receiving messages from some-one earlier, FB was making what sounded like a dull thudding sound, but no vibration although I have my vibration on for alerts. Still, not the end of the world as alerts for every notification could become a tad irritating anyway.

Hmm. Im getting the vibrations and the thud ding sound. Interesting, and it gets my attention. lol!

Take care.

Well a couple of days ago I was reading a post that a notification (within the app-not a push) had directed me to, and on the right of the screen was an actions tab that gave me the option to turn on notifications. I assume this means just for that post, but anyway I toggled it on and off a few times before leaving it on. Maybe that will fix it, who knows!

Nope hasn't worked-c'est la vie.

So the other day my phone was randomly vibrating and making a faint sound. Intrigued, I discovered it was indeed Facebook pushing some unimportant notifications to me. IT wasn't the sound I've selected in settings, and still it is often not alerting me but seems to be working some of the time which is encouraging.

I now use IFTTT to get what I really want from facebook notifications. it's making things much easier to deal with. So for me it is not broken, yet.

Take care.

Hey Mary, Is IFTTT accessible? I thought that it was not. Can you see other peoples recipes to get ideas on how best to utilize the application? Let me know. Thank you. -Andrew-

Hello all, What is IFTTT? If it is an app I have never heard of it. Thank you.

I was able to get my notifications until last week. First after an update they were spoken twice as I scrolled through. Now, when I click the "notifications, FB simply closes. I tried contacting FB developers but should have contacted the accessibility team which I'll do now. It is frustrating though as sometimes I'm looking for responses to something important.

I've been getting sounds and, if I'm right there VO reads the message, in fact twice. However, if I want to check later, or reply to something, I am immediately shut out of FB and no matter what I do it's the same. I'm using IOS7.2, with both iPhone 5 and iPad gen 3 and the same thing happens on both. I too would be interested in anyone's thoughts.

This blog bought me some relief. Glad to know that I am not the only one having problems with receiving notifications from the Facebook app. This happens with all apps I have set to notify. Which are Facebook, Facebook Messenger, Linkedin, Twitter, Podcast etc.

The problem looks larger than we think it is and is not app. related. Time to write to apple accessibility.

Submitted by Brooke on Wednesday, December 3, 2014

I'm not sure this issue is accessibility-related. My Facebook notifications are sporadic; sometimes they'll work for a few days, and then they disappear again. I thought the issue was due to my iPhone 5, but I've got the 6 now and have had similar issues. Right now, the notifications have been working steadily for almost a week, but I'm sure that will change.

Submitted by Usman on Wednesday, December 3, 2014

My sighted friends who are not using voiceover are also experiencing this so it is not accessibility related.

Look it is not the problem only with the Facebook app. as I mentioned earlier all the other apps. I have set for notifications don't work either. Now my question is; keeping the above comment in mind; who do we report this glitch to? Sorry, tried everything i.e. all combinations just don't get the alerts/ notifications...

Submitted by Brooke on Thursday, December 4, 2014

Have you considered doing a reset of your phone? I can't speak for everyone, but for me, the only notifications that don't always work, are Facebook's. All other notifications on my iPhone and iPad are working.

Submitted by Mister Kayne on Thursday, December 4, 2014

Oh no that is a scary thing to do. Messes up my contacts and have to rack my brain for a hour with the settings

I'm sorry I didn't try and register to this forum when this post was made, but I had experienced the same thing.
I only found this a few weeks ago because I was having similar problems with notifications. I wasn't receiving mine at all. I ended up making a new account. But I know how you can fix the sound for notifications!
Go into the facebook app, and double-tap on the more tab.
Then scroll through until you find settings and double-tap on it. On the alert that comes up, double-tap account settings.
Then scroll until you find notifications, then double-tap.
Scroll to mobile, then double tap it.
Scroll over to the edit link, and this is where the sounds for push notification settings are.
I think by default it's set to only important notifications, so you want to check the box that says all notifications, except the ones you unsubscribe from.
Hope this helps!
