Controlling VoiceOver remotely

By Paul Ruvolo, 1 January, 2022

iOS and iPadOS

I was wondering what options exist for performing actions with VoiceOver without touching the phone. I'm specifically wondering if there are any sort of bracelets or other devices that could be used to transmit swipe gestures to the iPhone. I know voice input would be an option in this case (e.g., Voice Control), but what about some sort of physical, wearable device.

Does something like this exist?

Thanks in advance.

Hi there,

I don’t know about any wearables like what you are asking. Maybe someone else can answer that for us. I do know that there are a wide range of Bluetooth Keyboards out that you can buy and connect to your device. myself, I am currently replying to you using an Anker Keyboard that I just got a couple months back. Hope this info helps

I thought that Apple recently introduced some gestures that the iWatch could recognize like clentching a fist or moving a certain finger without having to touch the screen. Not sure if that is useful.

Also there are certain switch devices that Voiceover can respond to but not sure how those work for people with motor impairments.

Just some thoughts.

This keyboard will work and it’s specifically designed for voiceover users but it is expensive. https://lssproducts.com/rivo-2-bluetooth-smartphone-keyboard/

You can use a braille Display or keyboard to remotely control an iOS device with voiceover, personally I have a Apple Magic Keyboard which works perfectly fine with voiceover

I've heard good things about Tap and O6

www.tapwithus.com is, from what I gather, a series of rings that slide over your fingers and thumb, connected by a thin strap. Not only can you remotely control VoiceOver, but input all the letters/numbers as well, assuming you're willing to learn the code to do so using the apps provided. However, its very pricey. less so is this tiny remote control that I've heard nothing but good of, though haven't seen. https://www.o6app.com/accessibility#overview

Hable One

Hable One is a device to control an iPhone / iPad. This remote handheld keyboard allows you to both insert Braille and to navigate your device. It has the six braille keys and the keys seven and eight. The keys for the dots 1, 2 and 3 are in one line, parallel to the dots 4,5 and 6. You can compare it to BSI or MBraille in the Away-mode.
This little remote handheld keyboard is available in the Netherlands, Belgium and the UK. Soon it will be available in other countries. For further information go to https://iamhable.com/order
To use the device, you do not need to be able to read Braille, it is not a Braille display, but it requires at least a little bit of knowlege of typing Braille. The command for dictating text will come with the next firmware update. It weighs 100 grams / 3,53 Ounces.
