Can anyone recommend the best apps for both identifying products and reading package directions? Thanks.

I use Digit Eyes for both of those applications. It will recognize the bar code on a product, and then give you information such as name, ingredients, and usage instructions.

I agree with the previous commenter that Digit Eyes is great for doing this. Not all bar codes will give you instructions on how to make meals or put things together. I use KNFB Reader for this. It reads ingredients but sometimes doesn't have the right amounts for this.
Hope that helps

I too am looking for a product identification app to replace the now apparently defunct Red Laser.

I tried Digit Eyes, but its bar code scanner is slow and unreliable.

In order for it to see a bar code both the camera and the product need to be motionless for at least 5 seconds. This is fine if you know where the UPC code is on the package, but if you don't, it isn't very practical.

Worse when I knew where the bar code is, I've had it sit and scan for a minute without ever recognizing the bar code in the image.

What would be ideal is Digit Eyes' capabilities blended with Red Laser's very fast and reliable scanner.
