Introducing Hooke Verse Wireless Headphones; Capture Binaural 3D Audio on your iOS device

App Developer

Hi All!

I was referred to this amazing site by one of your members Justin (drummer0608)

I myself am not blind, but I have invented a product that blind iOS users like Justin are getting really excited about. He urged that I share here.

My name is Anthony Mattana. For the last 5 years I've worked as a professional sound designer and composer in NYC. Now I am the founder and creator of Hooke Audio and have always been fascinated by binaural audio. For those that don't know, binaural audio is recorded audio captured identically to the way the human ear experiences sound. The result is a two channel recording that makes any listener with a pair of headphones feel like they are there. How cool is that?!

There haven't been any products out there that let a user record binaural audio to their iphones, so I decided to invent one! I combined binaural recording technology into a pair of wireless headphones. It's called the Hooke Verse. Hooke Audio is my company. Hooke is both a playback and capturing device, capable of playing music AND recording 3D Audio. Check out my site here: www.hookeaudio.com and our youtube channel here to hear our 3d recordings captured with Hooke: https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCBRvQgL46ga9WmgFyTFxNCg

I hope to bring binaural recording to all by making storytelling as easy as unlocking your iOS device!

Would love to hear what you guys think of my product and would be happy to answer any questions you might have! Right now we are manufacturing the headphones. You can pre order via our website. They are set to ship late this summer.

Thank you!
Anthony

#252 Jessiepp: Send an e-mail to the company

Club AppleVis Member

In the comment just above your last one, there is an e-mail address. Send your questions there. Hopefully that will help you.

#253 Yep I sent anthony some

Yep I sent anthony some issues I'm having as well as left a comment on inclusive android as I didn't want to get in trouble here. Lol!

Take care all.

#254 Good luck

@ke7zum good luck. I hope things get sorded out soon. I cannot wait to order mine soon. so far, the sound quality is truly out of this world.

#255 All I can say at this point

All I can say at this point is we're working on it.. I really cannot say any more than that, I will say this though, support are wonderful and they saw the problem I was having.

#256 I know right?

@ke7zum I know right? All I can say for me on my end is they are working on the vibration when recording begins. support is wonderful. Keep it up.

#257 regarding a few usability features

Hi there all.
I just wanted to make my voice known as head of accessibility at hooke audio.
I would like to address some of the direct touch gestures with voiceover on IOS.
This I'm sure, can take a few tries to get used to.
First, I would like to point out, at the moment, at times, VO can seem to loose speech on screen in the app.
This is most likely because a user can be touching the direct touch area on screen wich VO does not speak.
This area is roughly according to VO and my judgement, 3 quarters of the hooke capture screen.
The other area near the bottom portion of the screen is a focusable area by voiceover and contains the controls for start/stop recording, camera on/off, the settings button, and galary button for browsing recordings one has made on the app.
These controls may take a bit of exploration to find just by touch on screen, but I find that touching near the bottom and using the flick gesture can expose these controls as well.
I would also like to bring to your attention that while in the hooke app, on the capture screen, the button on the right side of the hooke verse unit can be used to start/stop recording.
This was a specific feature to make it very easy to record quickly when launching the hooke app.
Next:
I would like to talk about adjusting levels.

I usually check my level by touching one finger in the direct touch area to hear VO speak a volume level between 11/21; the higher the first number, the lower gain level.
To adjust level of the microphones, you take two fingers side by side, place them in the top middle area of the screen and slide them slowly up or down to decrease/increase the microphone gain levels.
You will hear adjustment feedback when wearing the hooke as you adjust levels
you also can use the physical volume buttons on the phone to increase/decrease the monitor level, e.g what your hearing in the verse speakers.
I hope this is of some help to the members of apple Vis, and I am available to address question/concerns to the best of my knowledge.
feel free to reach out on the form, or contact me on twitter.
My username is drummer0608
I thank you all for taking the time to express your interest in a product that changes the way we capture our daily lives (especially as blind people).
I love that I can put on a normal pair of headphones and record the world, as I see it.

#258 Hooke Audio

I totally agree with Justin's comments above. The use of the Hooke app will take some getting used to especially as it relates to using direct touch around the capture screen. Like Justin, I have been a part of the Hooke beta team and it has been great to watch this product evolve. I also would like to extend my help to any user of the product out there. Feel free to contact me on Applevis or follow me on Twitter. My Twitter username is @richcav

#259 Re: regarding a few usability features

Hello all,

I am going to address both Justin, Anthony and Rich here, as I see no use in cluttering the forum with ten billion posts about virtually the same topic, lol. So, here it goes.

I am very thankful to all 3 of you for extending your assistance to those who may be confused. The post that you Justin, have posted, will definitely help newcomers to iPhone who may be considering the Hookeverse as a microphone replacement, understand/get to grips with how direct touch in a nutshell works... but mostly, how the Hookeaudio app works.

You guys and Anthony are doing a fantastic job. I am definitely preparing to order my set next month, smiles.

Anyways, to Anthony, if you see this, keep up the excellent, fantastic work developing the Hookeverse, and to both Justin and Rich, you guys keep up the fantastic, excellent work to make the Hookeaudio app and the Hookeverse as accessible for all who may experience it, whether it be soon, in the future, or years and generations beyond!!

I cannot express how wonderful you all are doing!!

#260 Questions regarding the hooke verse and voiceover

Hi,
I have 2 questions regarding the hooke verse and voiceover. first, I have another pare of bluetooth hedsets, and it is the shadoe wireless. When you do direct touch typing on your iphone, while it's connected, it beeps. Does the Hooke Verse beeps whenever you do direct touch typing on your iPhone with voiceover running, or only when turned on/off or when in pareing mode? if it only beeps when turned on/off or in pareing mode, I may consider purchasing the hooke verse. also, what is the overall performance of the hooke verse in turms of lagg. for example, most bluetooth hedsets I've tryed, voiceover lagg still hapins, but not all that much. Just wondering. If someone could answer my questions, that would be fantastic. Thanks!

#261 @djmacradio

to answer your questions:
the hooke verse does not beep whe typing on the iPhone.
The headset experiences normal lag with voicever out side of the Hooke App.

#262 @Portia Scott

Hi Portia,

Thank you for the positive feedbacck!!
I love helping others, and especially when its my pation to record the world around me and re-live it, just like someone with sight.
I can't wait for you to receive your Hooke Verse and experience the same things like I do.
Your gonna love it :)

#263 Thank you for your answers!

Hi,
Thank you for your answers! I cannot wait to order mine. it'll be great to experience the same thing you have experienced, in 3d audio. I'm guessing you could call them virtual reality hedphones but captureing binaural audio. Also, I wonder would their be a podcast available demonstrating the unit in action?

#264 a possible bug in the Hooke Audio App, can anyone reproduce?

Hi,
I am having an issue with the Hooke audio app, when I start recording audio, then lock my screen, sometimes the app will crash, but audio monitoring will stay active. It's hit or miss when this occurs, so I never know from one time to the next when I press record if the app will crash or not. But it seems to occur when I get a notification, whether or not do not disturb is on. I'm using an iPhone 7 with the latest software.
Thanks,
Moop

#265 email the support team regarding this issue

To the previous poster, email your issue to the support team at:

#266 @Moopie Curran

Hi,
We are aware of this bug you are experiencing.
I personally use the app for recording just audio most of the time.
I can tell you for sure, anthony's team is working on a fix :)

#267 Are they aware of the vibration when recording...

Hi Justin,

Are they aware of the vibration when recording begins? also, the alert tone can be herd twice. it should play once when recording begins, and again when recording ends. Just thought you should be aware.

#268 The app could do with some urgent accessibility attention

The hooke audio app which is currently available on the App Store, could really do with some much needed urgent accessibility attention. It's very unusual interface, and makes working with the hardware much harder than it needs to be.

#269 re: accessibility

Actually working with the hardware is very easy, all you need to do is to get used to direct touch. Iv'e ben using direct touch since I believe garage band in I want to say 2012. It actually makes sence if you read the hint.

#271 Accessing the app's video capture feature?

Club AppleVis Member

Hello,

How does a blind VoiceOver user access the app's video capture feature?

I noticed the accessibility tip for accessing this feature is presented as though it were for a sighted user rather than a blind user.

I find it difficult to justify the 100 percent accessibility claim in the app store.

As an accessibility professional, I am deeply disappointed in the way Hooke Audio has implemented VoiceOver accessibility in the current version of its app, and I would be happy to help the company implement accessibility improvements.

#272 Concerns about my Hooke Verse hardware.

Club AppleVis Member

Hello everybody,

Has anyone else experienced any difficulty turning on/off their new Hooke Verse?

Nothing happens most of the time when I press the button on the right earbud.

Sometimes, they do turn on, but it seems to be intermittent.

I have plugged them in and kept them charging all night, so I'm looking forward to testing them again this morning.

Does anyone know how long battery charging should take?

#273 Accessible product instructions for the Hooke Verse?

Club AppleVis Member

Hello,

Does anyone have an accessible copy of the printed instructions supplied in the box?

Thanks,

Darrell

#274 Another thought about the app

Member of the AppleVis Blog Team

It seems like the app has confused a lot of blind users, myself included as shown by my earlier posts in this thread, although I've figured out how it works now. I'd like to suggest that direct touch is unnecessary, and the app could be made easier to use without it. Going through the accessibility tips: two finger double-tap to start/stop recording: developers can control what that gesture does without resorting to direct touch. Tapping the icons for video: this would be a lot easier without direct touch, as VO users could then flick around the screen without worrying about avoiding the direct touch area. increase/decrease recording level with two finger hold and slide up/down: I don't see why we need a non-standard gesture for this, when it could be made into a standard slider. As long as it's easy to find, which it is at the moment, VO users don't need a non-standard gesture to be able to change levels quickly. Use physical volume buttons to adjust playback volume: doesn't matter whether direct touch is used or not. Hold two fingers for battery level: this could be displayed somewhere on screen so that a VO user could tap on or flick to it to have it reported.

#275 Accessing video

Member of the AppleVis Blog Team

Darrell, to access the video capture features, essentially you get to those icons the same way you found the settings button. First tap the bottom of the screen and VO should report one of the buttons. You can then flick, keeping your finger at the bottom of the screen so as to avoid the direct touch area. You should find an icon which is called "video off" by default, but changes to "disable camera" if you turn it on and "enable camera" if you turn it off again. You can also find the gallery button in the same way. Hope that helps.

#276 the Hooke app

Hello all,As a beta tester, i have to direct every one to Justin's comment above as to how to use the app. The app is accessible yes is direct touch different? Yes, but it does work with Voiceover. Justin and I along with other blind beta testers ensured of this throughout the entire beta process. It will take some getting used to but I assure you this app dhes work with Voiceover. Anyone who is struggling read Justin's post and then if your still stuck, you can feel free to reach out to me. I tell you guys, it is so cool to capture all kinds of audio in the field using this amazing product!!!

#277 @ke7zum

@ke7zum after listening to the recording, not bad. on the microphone, that hissing sound is normal. The overall quality isn't all that bad afterall. I'm going to totally order this even before my birthday. I hope they fix the vibration when recording begins soon for iOS users. that will make me happy. I may not capture my sisters wetting, but I'm sure I could think of other things to capture. also, since you could now share onto youtube and facebook, now I can do audio only content in 3d audio! Nice job on your end. it actually felt like I was their with you. Did you know you could capture 3d audio up to 40 feet away from your phone? Now that is incredible.

#278 Re: Concerns about my Hooke Verse hardware.

It could be possible your Hooke Verse could need a reset.
There is a small push button located on the right earbud Hooke, that can be pressed for like 10 seconds to reset your Verse..
As for charging time, 2 hours or so to be sure the battery if fully charged.
Expected 8-9 hours of playback or recording time.
HTH

#279 App Feedback

Thanks all for the feedback and suggestions when using voiceover in the Hooke App.
I'm 100% sure that the team is monitoring this form and are aware of VO issues.
Please keep in mind the app has direct touch areas that can be new to some voiceover users.
This, even for me, took some time to get used too.
Again, as I posted earlier, the app is usable if not a bit quirky at times with voiceover.
Remember, the developer did not even have to consider accessibility at all but I thank him for it kindly so.

#280 Hookeverse staying on your neck/ears.

@ke7zum, did you ever figure out your issue with the Hookeverse earbuds staying in your ear, and the Cable that goes over your neck staying on your neck? I know you were saying it had fallen out of your ear in your podcast, and were afraid the Cable that goes around your neck would fall off. I can't wait till 1 June… LOL. That way I can order my Hookverse.

#281 wearing Hooke Verse

To place hooke Verse on correctly:
note: The right earbud Hooke has the micro USB port and multi-function.
This should go on the right ear.
When its placed correctly, the charging port should be facing away from you virtically (up and down) with the powerbutton located on the outside away from your neck.
Then, the cable should run behind your neck going to the other earbud Hooke.
The left side should be placed so the cable is not twisted and or tangled in the same position as the right side earbud Hooke.
The wires leading down from each Hooke to the Earbud are very flexable and can be adjusted to a comfortable fit in your ears.
Hope this helps with wearing the Verse.

#282 install the windscreens on to Hooke Verse

I will try and describe attaching the windscreens
from the stand point of wearing the verse when the screens are properly secured, the closed side of them will be facing down when wearing the unit correctly
the windscreens are put on the unit similar to placing on a sock.
the difference is is that there is a tiny whole in one side half way down the small windscreen.
This whole is wear the earbud nub goes through to firmly secure the screen to the unit.
Note please remove your earbud tips before pushing the earbud nub through the small whole.
then, replace the tips onto the earbud nub as before
the windscreens will b securely in place this way.
HTH

#283 Thanks a lot. looks like...

Thanks a lot. Looks like I'm learning ahead before I even order it. For the ear tips, I think small is a perfect sise, but their are 2 types: memorie and celacome. any differences?

#284 Thanks Juston, How would I

Thanks Juston, How would I make sure the fit is a bit better by adjusting the wire leading from the hook to the ear bud in my ear. I say ear bud as that's what it looks like. Lol! I'm just afraid I'll brake it, but I am after all, a klutz. Lol!

Thanks for such a grate app. We have a discussion of the hooke audio app on inclusive android, Just look for it on their website. I won't give it here as I don't want to get band from this site. I do use both products so ...

Take care all.

#285 Which button starts/stops recording?

One mor question: on the right hand side of the verse, wich button starts/stops recording? just curious to ask.

#286 hardware multi function button

the button on the right side of the Hooke Verse can be used for
play/pause
when in Hooke app: start and stop recording both audio and video.

#287 Re: Thanks Juston, How would I

@ke7zum, Great question. It seems like you read my mind. I was going to ask the same question… LOL.

#288 Re: hardware multi function button

Wow! that was a very fast response, at least to me. Thanks for all that info. That is very useful!

Also, to prevent spamming, and creating 1 billion threads, a friend was wondering, how do you put together that gym head? Has anyone figured that out? Thanks again.

#289 assembling Gym Head for Hooke Verse

As of now, its quite difficult to know at least for me which pieces to cut out of the shipping box in order to construct the cardboard head.
I had a sighted person help me assemble it for now.
I'm working with anthony to try and work with what we have to come up with a way to assemble it by feel alone.

#290 That was fast!

Wow Justin, That was fast! btw, Followed you on twitter, so follow me back and any future questions I will just direct message them. Thanks again for all your assistants! I'll order once the time is right.

#291 You can record wiht the

You can record wiht the button on the right side of the hooke? I thought that was only for powering on the unit. Cool

#292 how to export recordings and some other questions

Hello,

I orderd my Hooke 2-years ago and I'm waiting to get this in my hands. But I have some questions for the people who are already playing with this gadget:
- How do you export the recordings? Does it work with the standard export menu of iOS where you can choose an app to export: mail, messages, whatsapp, dropbox.... I hope so.
- Do you have to run the app while recording? Or can you run it on the background and open other apps?
- Does voiceover keeps working while recording.... and does it talk from the phone's speaker?

Thanks

-

#293 If it works the same on ios

If it works the same on ios as it does on my droid, voiceover will come through the speaker, you can share recordings, yes, or at least that's how it should work.

#294 Finally going to order the Hooke Verse for my Birthday, or...

Hi,
I have decided to order the Hooke Verse for my birthday!!! Just got to save the money, then I will order the device. Soon, everything will be captured in 3d audio, even my youtube channel, and facebook!!! sooo excited!!! I will update you guys as I get closer. who knows, it might be earlyer than anticipated.

#295 Re: Finally going to order the Hooke Verse for my Birthday,

Hello there,

Congratulations on possibly ordering the Hookeverse for your birthday. I can't wait to get mine on my birthday too. I'm going to see if it is still going to happen, or if I can just order it earlier. I really love the sound of this Hookeverse.

I know some people in general have been saying not to get it, but I am thoroughly excited by capturing things in binaural audio. I have never captured anything in binaural audio before, and I have always wanted to, ever since I can remember. So whether some like it or not, I plan to purchase this. This will be really awesome, especially for when I do things on YouTube, which my mother said we might try to figure out a way for me to do YouTube videos better. So I am really thoroughly excited.

Best of luck to you on your purchase, and remember they are on limited supply, so you might want to jump on the bandwagon, as soon as you save that money.

And even if you decide to get binaural headphones or microphones off of another site like Amazon, they will probably be extremely expensive, like in the $600 range. I have not found binaural headphones with a microphone or anything like that for cheaper than that. So I am trying to convince my mother to let me get them. LOL.

#296 Yes, I agree

Yes, I agree. I'll probably order the device early, even before my birthday, since I only have 4 months left. And yes, I agree, amazons prices can be very expensive. but even after I herd some audio examples from the Verse off of their youtube channel, I've figured that this device is well worth the purchase. I've never recorded in Binaural before, and since I too have a youtube channel, I will do audio only content and upload it using a site my friend told me about.

#297 Feedback?

Hello,

So folks here have received their units but no one seems to be posting about it. Will current owners please provide feedback? Is it what you expected? Would you recommend it to a friend? Is the playback or sound quality going to the ear pieces good quality that I don’t have to bring along extra head set to listen to music? I’m on the fence with this one. Air pods or hook audio. Is the hardware itself good quality? What don’t you like about it?

Be honest as your answers may help the folks at hook audio improve their product.

Thanks.

#298 I really love mine now that I

I really love mine now that I know how to use it, the fit is tight, although there has to be a way to convert them into lapel mics for when and if I go on any rides. I don't want these things falling off. I can't say enough good things about my unit, I really cannot.

#299 Replying to a couple comments:

Hi, I have also been a Hooke Audio beta tester for some time and would like to answer a couple questions that I see on the forem.
Falco:
Yes, You share recordings through the standard iOS share sheet.
Yes, the Hooke iOS app can be put to background while recording audio.
Yes, when monitoring/recording with the Hooke Audio app, all system IPhone audio is played back through your IPhones speaker.
:)

david s:
I don't think one can know really what to expect with this product, because it is a one of a kind, but yes I am a very satasfied owner of the Hooke Verse.
The Development team continues to prove they are super committed to accessibility.
I can not speak fully of the release version of the headset, but please feel free to read through an article I posted a week or so ago.
I really do believe in this product, as it's eas of use has really changed my life and how I record audio.

#300 Some thoughts on everything that has been said so far.

Hello all,

Even though I do not own this headset, I wanted to make some opinions that I had on what has been said so far known to you all.

1.

Yes, I did find a binaural in ear headset on Amazon, that was rated five out of five stars by one reviewer.

2.

Although this headset that I found on Amazon was rated five out of five stars by one reviewer, I do not think that justifies purchasing it, as I'd like to see more reviews than just one. However, this is up to all of you, who have not purchased the Hookverse.

3.

Thanks to those of you, who have provided feedback on The Hookeverse, Thus far. To those of you who are like me, and are debating on whether it is worth getting it, only you can make the true decision. Yes, opinions are good, but only the person making the decision can decide whether a product is worth it, Especially when it's something like this, that is one of a kind, and is different from your standard normal headset/earbuds.

Not only that, but it seems like it is definitely different from your standard binaural headsets/earbuds, as well… Especially since they seem to care so much about accessibility, and blind users as well, not just those that are cited.

Anyways, this is just my 2 cents worth. Hopefully the comments that you've read Thus far, will help in aiding you in deciding whether The Hookeverse Is worth it for you to purchase. I was definitely on the fence about getting it, but now, since I've seen all the horrible ratings on most of the binaural headphones/headsets on Amazon, I am definitely thinking of getting this wonderful headset. Especially since they care so much about accessibility, and are trying to figure out how to get that Gym Head constructible by feel for blind users.

Anyway, have a nice evening. And oh! Good job to Hookeaudio. You definitely have one extremely impressed potential customer!
