Introducing Hooke Verse Wireless Headphones; Capture Binaural 3D Audio on your iOS device

App Developer

Hi All!

I was referred to this amazing site by one of your members Justin (drummer0608)

I myself am not blind, but I have invented a product that blind iOS users like Justin are getting really excited about. He urged that I share here.

My name is Anthony Mattana. For the last 5 years I've worked as a professional sound designer and composer in NYC. Now I am the founder and creator of Hooke Audio and have always been fascinated by binaural audio. For those that don't know, binaural audio is recorded audio captured identically to the way the human ear experiences sound. The result is a two channel recording that makes any listener with a pair of headphones feel like they are there. How cool is that?!

There haven't been any products out there that let a user record binaural audio to their iphones, so I decided to invent one! I combined binaural recording technology into a pair of wireless headphones. It's called the Hooke Verse. Hooke Audio is my company. Hooke is both a playback and capturing device, capable of playing music AND recording 3D Audio. Check out my site here: www.hookeaudio.com and our youtube channel here to hear our 3d recordings captured with Hooke: https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCBRvQgL46ga9WmgFyTFxNCg

I hope to bring binaural recording to all by making storytelling as easy as unlocking your iOS device!

Would love to hear what you guys think of my product and would be happy to answer any questions you might have! Right now we are manufacturing the headphones. You can pre order via our website. They are set to ship late this summer.

Thank you!
Anthony

#201 Shipment notification?

Hi
I preordered one of these in May of 2015, will I get a shipment notification when mine ships?
Thank you,
Moop

#202 Thanks Anthony

Member of the AppleVis Blog Team

Thanks Anthony for your very fast response. I've just placed an order (not sure why it wasn't working for me earlier today, but it went smoothly when I tried it just now). Given that I'm in the UK, roughly when should I expect to get it?

As for the app, am I supposed to be able to access the settings button even without a Hooke Verse connected? Because as I said, the only control I can access after launching the app is the volume control. Whether I swipe left/right or move my finger around and touch different parts of the screen, all I get is complete silence. Voiceover doesn't report any other controls, nor do I hear the sounds VO normally makes when moving between controls. I have an iPhone 6 running iOS 10.3.

Sorry if my last comment seemed overly negative; I'm really looking forward to getting to use the product, and any criticisms are meant in the spirit of trying to help make things even better.

#203 I can't wait to receive mine,

I can't wait to receive mine, I'm very very excited. I have not received my shipping notification yet, but I preordered mine so we'll see.

#204 Waiting to red reviews

I'm still waiting to read reviews on the device in the world of podcasting before I end up making a purchase. I don't want to end up purchasing a device that I use only once, then the next or a few mor days down the road, I put it away and never use it. I want something that's worth spending my money for, not throwing money out the window. Hopefully the reviews I red are great reviews. I shall see. I'm looking forward to using the app once it's available. @AnthonyM hasn't posted anything at all. Guess he's probably doing some last minut prep before the device shipps. I saw that the site is out of stock as of right now, but it says give us your email address and they will let you know when it's back in stock. I also hope musical instruments/electronic outlets, such as SamAsh, Guitar Center, Sweet Water, Bestbuy, Etc sales the device as well. If yes, I would love to get my hands on a demo unit to see what it's like, then if it sounds great, then I will make a purchase. I've herd some amazing samples on their youtube channel, and that device can make a great tool for podcasting and beyond. Because afterall, I enjoy audio and recording. In fact, soon, films will add 3d audio sound into their future productions. Remember the 3d glasses? that was cool. you just put the glasses on, and you feel like you are actually seeing the moment. same as with 3d audio, accept everyone, no matter if they are at a park, a concert event at their church, or at their birthday party, or family gathering, they can hear the moment as if they were their in person. I cannot wait for the arrivel!

#205 App is amazing!

Hey guys, I've just downloaded the hooke audio app, and it's amazing! I cannot believe it's 100% accessible with VoiceOver. @AnthonyM and the team did an amazing job. If I had the hooke verse, which btw is recommended for recording, I would do my first recording, but sadley no. however, if anyone receives the Hooke Verse soon, I would love to here it demoed on the apple vis podcast, that way I could get an idea on how it sounds like before purchasing it. Other than that, Well done Hooke Audio team!

#206 The app

Member of the AppleVis Blog Team

djmacradio, you say the app is fully accessible, and that you're using it without a hooke verse connected, so how do you actually navigate around it, since the standard gestures don't seem to work? Are there non-standard gestures? I'm sure I must be missing something really obvious here, because everyone's saying it's fully accessible, but I'm finding it unusable. I thought that might be because I don't have a hooke verse yet, and I guessed that the controls might become accessible only when one is connected, so it's odd that you're finding it so accessible. Perhaps the app doesn't work with the iPhone 6... or perhaps it's because I haven't updated to iOS 10.3.1 yet (I'm still on 10.3). That's all I can think of. When I open it, VO just says "recording volume, maximum recording level on 21 21, dimmed" and then doesn't respond to flicks or taps. Are you getting something different to that?

#207 You have to listen to the

You have to listen to the hints in the settings portion.

Good luck.

#208 Settings

Member of the AppleVis Blog Team

But how do I even get to the settings portion? I've tried just about every VO gesture I know and it says nothing about settings.

#209 Ok, I finally figured it out

Member of the AppleVis Blog Team

I've played with the app again and managed to get to the settings button and the accessibility tips by using my bluetooth keyboard. The problem was that because the app uses direct touch, none of the standard VO gestures work so you can't flick to the settings button. As far as I can tell, there's no way of getting to the settings button without having a keyboard, because you can't turn direct touch off using the rotor gesture in an app where the whole screen is reserved for direct touch, and that option is only available in the rotor within an app that uses it. If there's a gesture that opens the settings, I don't know what it is. My point is that this app could be very confusing for a new blind user, because it's not at all obvious how to get to the settings screen that explains the gestures for recording and such.

#210 here's how it works

@LC3429 OK, here's how it workds, when the app opens, touch the bottom of the screen. VoiceOver should say, "settings button." if it says "Gallary button," then you are at the right place. now, flick left, and you should here VoiceOver say, "settings." give it a try and let me know if it works. also, in the settings screen, their's an accessibility tips button. when you dubble tap it, VoiceOver will tell you how to use the app with voiceover running. hth.

#211 Thanks

Member of the AppleVis Blog Team

@djmacradio Thanks for letting me know where it is. I've got that to work now. I did try exploring the screen at one point, but must have missed it. Also: @AnthonyM, in the part of the app store description that talks about accessibility and how to get to the tips, you could add that the user needs to touch the bottom of the screen to get to the settings button. This would be helpful because most people's first instinct would be to flick, and that won't work without touching the bottom first.

#212 I agree with the tip the last

I agree with the tip the last poster gave, also can someone in the android department add the same tip what ever it is so that those of us who are either newbies or impatient may not get frustrated as well?

Thanks.

#213 ACTUAL TECHNICAL SPECS FOR THE MICROPHONES???

@AnthonyM: I placed an order solely based on demos. However, I'm an audio engineer, and would like to know how the microphones perform. Specifically, could you give some actual figures regarding the noise floor, and maximum dBSPL handling? Are loud metal concerts going to overload the microphones? Will I hear background hiss if I record quiet nature sounds or completely acoustic music?

If you have published actual specs somewhere, please direct me to them.

Also, any updates as to when units will be shipping are greatly appreciated.

#214 I'm wondering that too

I'm wondering that too. I'm totally sure that the mics could pick up Live performances such as a rock concert. for example, I've herd a few recordings on youtube and the cameras built-in microphone sounds distorded. However, at some point when I listened to an audio sample from Hooke Audio, the mics actually turned out to be amazing when it comes to picking up Live concerts. Just curious to know as well. Again, I'm not ready to make a purchase until I here positive reviews. Thank you.

#215 Questions about mic specs, low-cut filters, and limiters

Member of the AppleVis Blog Team

Hi Anthony,
Chris Smart brought up the topic of mic specs -- so I won't delve into that. However, one crucial issue is whether or not this headphone recorder has low-cut filters. I'm asking this because with my Olympus LS-100 and Sony PCM-D100 recorders I utilize low filters quite heavily while recording concerts or when positioned in a windy environment. The low-cut filters do a very good job of eliminating the background hum or the extra annoying base, so I hope the iOS app has some sort of low-cut filters baked in. The same can be said about limiters.
Finally, does Hooke Verse allow for more directional recordings as opposed to 3D recording? I understand the rationale behind designing Hooke Verse, but not all recording settings are suitable for 3D recording, nor is it really necessary to resort to such a recording mode for all purposes. As such, it would be great if the accompanying iOS app could allow us to digitally alter the microphone directionality from 3D to, say, 120 degrees, 80 degrees, mono, etc. I've seen this functionality in some iOS apps which accompany microphones. After all, spending $250 on something which can just record in 3D might be rather difficult.
Thanks.

#216 I agree

To the previous poster, I agree. I have the zoom IQ 5 microphone, which I have not played with in like forever. however, I'm so looking forward to ordering this, since this requires no additional setup, just pareing with your iPhone. Even though the cable will not work, I could still use it wirelessly, and I don't even haf to take the case off the phone to use it. and I sure hope the app includes a low cut filter for filtering backround noise, and other noisy environments. Again, I'm still waiting to read reviews before purchasing. or, maybe I can jump on it and purchase it. I shall see and keep you guys posted. Oh and one mor thing. I have notice that when pressing with 2 fingers on the screen to start recording, it doesn't vibrate or plays an alert tone when recording has started, and when you tap the screen with 2 fingers to end recording, it vibrates and the alert tone can be herd twice. has anyone elce notice it? I have, and emailed the issue to the Hooke Audio team. I hope that it get's fixed soon.

#217 just got shipping notice

hello there just bot my shopping notice, how do i track this and what is this that the cable won't work?

#218 Here's what I found after listening to a recording I found on...

Here's what I found after listening to a recording from youtube: When using the internal microphone on an iPhone, the sound is flat out mono. In other words, it's too dimentional. you cannot sence where you are when you walk around. on the other hand, with the hooke verse connected, when you walk around, you'll be able to sence where you are and follow each voice spacially as if the user was actually here in person. now that is totally amazing. hearing what's around you, instead of flat out mono. I love 3d. it's amazing. I know I'm not going to use the recording cable, as I have a battery pack case to go with the iPhone 7, but I'm totally looking forward to using the hooke verse wirelessly. And I sure hope the accessibility with the hooke audio app gets fixed asap. @AnthonyM thanks for all of your help/assistants, and I cannot wait to try out the hooke verse soon! 3d audio rocks! Now I will be able to capture everything in 3d audio. Christmas/new years with the family, even Live church services. Maybe a walk around the naberhood, who knows.

#219 shipping email!

Hello,

yesterday I received an email about my Hooke. It has been shipped, so I hope I can use it next week and can tell you all about the quality? :D

#220 Recording in M4A only?

Member of the AppleVis Blog Team

It seems to me, and some reviewers have also confirmed that Hooke Verse records in M4A only.
So may I know why it is the case? I've seen lots of MP3 recorders on the App Store. Also, how about PCM WAV? With due respect, M4A isn't an acceptable format especially when it comes to sharing recordings.

#221 Mine is out for delivery

Mine is out for delivery today, so expect a podcast and first time look on my podcast. Follow @tffppodcast for more info and links etc etc etc. I can't wait to also try the jimmy head.

#222 Will be ordering mine soon

@ke7zum congradulations! looking forward to hearing your first test on your podcast. I will be ordering mine soon. Looks like the word is out. the folks are experienceing 3d audio first hand. According to a video I saw on youtube, they are virtual reality headphones accept for both recording and playback. I hope the blindness community are happy with the purchase and the overall sound quality of their units. Hopefully when I hear the podcast I'll decide. So far from the sided community, the sound quality is great, but hopefully it'll be better for the blindness community at large.

#223 Just received headphones today but have a couple questions.

I've been extremely excited about these binaural headphones for quite a while now and I finally received them today. Most of my questions are about the hooke app, so I haven't made a full recording yet. I know about the accessibility tips and how to access them. I also know that there are a couple kinks in the recording tone and vibration upon engaging and disengaging the microphones. My main question is, can you monitor the recording from the headphones in realtime? How do you know you are recording at an acceptable level if you cannot tell that the recording is clipping or something? I'm having a little trouble adjusting levels and accessing the record stop buttons because, maybe I'm wrong since I've only spent about 15 minutes playing with them, but it's hard to tell when, and if, the app is recording, as well as what gain levels you are passing. I think it will make a lot more sense to me once I hear some kind of live demo, like a podcast. Like some previous posters said, sometimes the app will play a tone, sometimes it won't, and same goes for vibration. Sometimes upon stopping it plays 2 tones. I think the direct touch is just messing with me. Any help is appreciated.

#224 Hey Keighty excited to hear

App Developer

Hey Keighty excited to hear you've received! You can adjust monitoring level by pressing the built in volume buttons on your phone. This will not effect the overall level of your recording. Check this link from one of our accessibility team members who lays everything out for blind users: https://audioboom.com/posts/5897116-help-for-blind-users-of-the-hook-aud...

#225 can't get the app to work right, I think it's operator error

Hi,
My hooke verse just came today, I downloaded the app, I can make a recording, but I can't seem to get to the settings and to listen to my recordings. Any help would be appreciated.
Thanks

#226 Are you on Android? Make sure

App Developer

Are you on Android? Make sure storage toggle switch is enabled in app preferences on your phone.

#227 hooke verse

would like to know since i am on android can i also use this on my mac to also record or hear using the head phone options and what is the cable for?

#228 The cable.

The cable is for other recording devices that might not take Bluetooth, but could still receive a wired connection. At least I'm guessing that's the cable you are asking about.

#229 A few mor questions

Hi,
I have a few mor questions: first, when you pare the Hooke Verse to your iPhone, does it beep when it's pared and/or disconnected? and whenever their's clipping, will it vibrate and let the user know that the level is too high?? just wondering. Looking forward to ordering the hedphones soon. also, tryed the link and it says not found. Not sure why, but I would like some tips in audio form, or possibly an audio manual. you know, so that when I do decide to order the unit, I will know everything I need to know before I use the device for the first time.

#230 The problem I'm having with the app is hard to explain.

I know I'm missing something obvious. When I launch the app, all speech output is going to my phone speaker and I can't get any of my screen jestures to work. I can't tell if voiceover is using my main phone speaker when it's recording and that's why I can't hear the monitoring or what? I know some of the jestures like flicking won't work, but I'm talking about the tap to record and changing levels to be specific. When I double tap with 2 fingers, voiceover will sometimes route back to my headphones, and other times it will take me to the list of recordings, which is empty. I'm running the latest iOS on an iPhone 7. I will be glad when someone else who has received can record some type of demo using the app to record with voiceover.

#232 Yes, but...

I have listened to that post, and looked at comments. The only thing it's telling you to do is turn off and on mic privacy to access tips, which I have done.

#233 hooke verse

i am having a problem on android that i click record and no sound comes out of the head set and also when i go to settings the only thing i see is contact us.

#234 It doesn't vibrate when recording has started

I found out when starting a recording, it doesn't vibrate. only when you finished recording. that is an accessibility issue that needs to be fixed soon. just thought you guys should know.

#235 Are you making a recording

App Developer

Are you making a recording with your Hooke Verse paired or without a Hooke Verse?

To ensure a smooth connection, kill the app completely, pair your Hooke Verse, then open the app.

If you're not finding your recordings after a recording completes, make sure the "storage" toggle is enabled under Hooke Audio app preferences in your phone's settings. If it is not enabled, your recordings won't store.

We are working to add vibrate upon recording begin.

#236 Update.

I was able to make a recording, but for some reason I had to locate the button to start and stop, rather than doing the jestures. Also, coming from the microphone on the ear on the same side as where the charging jack is located, is a constant electrical noise. When I turn the level up, it goes up. When I turn the levels down, it follows but is equally as loud as the audio at all times. I've moved from room to room to see if it's something in my house. The best way I can describe it is a pulsing static sound. I'll upload examples unless anyone has an idea what it could be.

#237 update

katie was that using the blue tooth interface or the wired recording?

#238 Can't wait

I can't wait to get mine!! These sound so awesome!

#239 Thank you!

@AnthonyM thank you for the update. I would love it if the alert tone would play when recording begins in addition to the phone vibrating. I know you've been working hard to insure that the app is accessible to everyone. What are the Microphone technical specifications? I would like to know before I end up making a purchase. and what's the battery life?

#240 just saw that this records in

just saw that this records in wav in android is this what is supposed to do?

#241 Re: Update

To those that were asking if I was using a wired connection, no. This sound comes from the mics in Bluetooth. I'm using an iPhone 7 as stated before, so hard wires aren't an option. I do understand that sound like that usually comes from a wired connection though. I'm just wondering if it's something I'm doing, or if something's wrong with my set. I've messed with the levels and no matter how quiet or loud I have them, the noise persists. For those who don't feel like finding my previous comment, this is my example recording in m4a directly from the app. https://www.dropbox.com/s/i31tb5i8pb09phq/090517_600PM.m4a?dl=1

#242 oh ok sorry about didn't know

oh ok sorry about didn't know what phone you were using.

#243 I don't know neither

I don't know neither. after hearing the recording, it sounds like a humming sound from the app. Have you tried disconnecting the headphones? if not, do that and see what results you get. I don't own a hooke verse, but you could try and see what happens.

#244 Tried that but thanks.

I have turned my phone off and back on, turned the app off and on from the app switcher, and took the suggestion to have them pared before launching the app, which did fix my jesture issues so that's good. But the noise still persists no matter what. I took the cable and wired them into an old recorder, and the hum was waaaaaaay worse. I'm not sure... I can't wait until I get them working though.

#245 send it back for replacement or contact developer

Hi,
Send it back for replacement, or contact developer. that's probably your last resort. Note you'll need to wait awhile to receive your replacement, unless @AnthonyM or others found a way to fix it.

#246 Right.

That's what I figured, but I'm trying to use all my resources to make sure that it's not something I'm doing wrong. After all, the recording quality other than the electrical noise is great! And I figured out the app. So I'm just hoping it's something I can fix before going to those measures. Also I don't know if it helps but the noise increases with the level of the mic, so I'm thinking it might be some kind of hardware thing rather than the app. If I turn the level down, the sound goes down, but as long as you can hear recorded audio, you can hear that noise right along with it. Thanks again for all the help.

#247 One mor thing you could try

OK, don't send it back, because you already received the unit, but here's one mor thing you could try:
1. power off phone. (don't worry about all of your recordings, everything is saved)
2. once phone is off, turn it back on
3. Turn bluetooth off and back on again
4. Try recording from the app again, but this time, use the volume buttons to lower the noise level. What you could also do is 3 gental taps on the microphone. maybe that will stopp the humming.
HTH

#248 another question about the hooke verse

Hi,
I'm totally blind, and I'm wondering, exactly how the Hooke Verse headset is supposed to fit in my ear? Which side is the right, and which is the left? And what's the best way to get them to stay in. I'm kind of new to earbuds, so bare with me. :)

#249 two more things I'm really having trouble with

Hi,
I listened to the audio boom tutorial on how to work the accessibility tips, I was able to get the tips to come up once. But I'm really having issues with the direct touch gestures.
Also, when the app is in the main menu, is there any way possible that voiceover can stay routed within the headset? Because I'm having a very tough time focussing on voiceover when it's coming out of the speaker, and monitored audio which is coming through the headset, now if it was all coming through the headset, I'd be ok. I feel like I have to turn voiceover up REALLY REALLY LOUD to compensate for it not coming through the headset, and 1, it gets in my recording, and 2, it could possibly be disruptive to people around me.
The recording I was able to make sounded superb though. :)
Thanks

#250 @Keighty I am so sorry to

App Developer

@Keighty I am so sorry to hear you are having issues with your unit! Because Hooke Audio products are tested thoroughly before shipping, it is a rare instance when one is found defective. Nonetheless, I am here to help. Can you please email us at info@hookeaudio.com and we will get this resolved ASAP. Thank you -Anthony
