Question about using a bluetooth keyboard with the Contacts app

I've been working with one my learners today to enter information in the Contacts app using a Bluetooth keyboard. After we had entered a birthday using the picker item we couldn't get back out of it without pressing the Escape key. Unfortunately when you press the Escape key it then returns to the contacts heading and out of the form. Is there any other way of exiting the date picker to move onto the next form entry?

After adjusting, I press 'Enter'

I just popped over and entered a new contact. I am using my bluetooth keyboard. I moved down to birthday, and selected it. I got the picker and put in the date. I then just hit 'Enter' and that closed the picker.
I am on a iPhone 6s+ running iOS 10, and using a generic bluetooth keyboard.
