Facebook locked account: please help

By Tangela, 26 May, 2013

Accessibility Advocacy
Hi. Because I logged into my Facebook on a device I'd never used before for that purpose, Facebook has temporarily locked my account. Unfortunately, the verification process seems to be totally inaccessible-- first, one of those type in the letters in the images, and unlike other websites, Facebook doesn't offer an audio option for this that I can see. Furthermore, when reading up on the process on face book's help page, it says the next step is to identify photos of the people on my friends list. Needless to say, this too would be rather difficult. Does anyone know of a way to do this? Or will I have to contact Facebook itself? Thanks for any and all help. Tangela

You're somewhat stuck

Hi. I didn't log in from a different device, but I did lock myself out. Long story I think my pw was stolen. I needed to have someone set up my pasword again, and after she went through the captcha, you're right there is no alternative, because I'd set up my mobile number, I was able to get a text and we changed it that way. When a friend did use my photos to identify people, she managed it on the first try. I guess either try with a sighted person, or contact FB. sorry I'm not more help.

No, thank you for your experiences. I'll have to get some sighted assistance. Wow. Seems like something we should probably bring to the attention of the accessibility team. You'd think they'd make an alternative method.

There's a problem with catpchas now, though

Hi. I hope you do get into your account, and once there, put a cell number so you can get your facebook back. You'll still need to solve the captcha. The problem is I used to be good at them, so those who couldn't hear for instance the aim ones, I would discyper them, but now they are so garbled I can't make heads or tails of them and they make me say all kinds of un G rated words. Umm, I'm Irish storm for a reason? :) Good luck and let us know how it goes.

Been there

When it happened to me, I emailed the accessibility team and got no response. I was away for a week and had to wait until I could sign in on my home computer; I'd used that computer before and so it let me back in that way.

Same incident

Funnally enough, the same incident happened to me earlier this month. I had signed into Facebook on a different computer, which resulted in my account being locked. When I went on the site using my own computer, though, I was able to log in without problems. Facebook also sent me an e-mail indicating that my account was tampered with, but it stated that if I was the one behind this act to disregard it. I did just that, so all is well. I hope you're problem is resolved soon.

oh, they've been informed

Feel free to complain about this to facebook, but I, along with many others, have complained to them about not having a more accessible method for dealing with this, and other similar, situations. Unfortunately, accessibility has never been a big priority to facebook. It never hurts to inform them again; just don't count on seeing this change any time soon.
