Two Front Teeth—All We Want From Santa

Posted on Thursday, December 14, 2017 by AppleVis

A Message from St. Nick

Shortly after a quick stop at the Island of Misfit Toys, I always visit the good little boys, girls, geeks and nerds of AppleVis Land. It is difficult to know exactly what to bring you every holiday season, but I am rather fortunate. Members of AppleVis Land love to share their opinions, and that is clear both from the forum postings, as well as their wish lists sent to the North Pole.

I reached into my mailbox and pulled out a few of the…

Posted on Wednesday, December 13, 2017 by PaulMartz

When I’m not listening to punk rock, helping my dad set the thermostat, or reading audiobooks, I do occasionally make an attempt to contribute to society. I talk at local blind support groups about using technology.

Most of the groups I visit are at…

Apple Releases iOS 11.2.1; Fixing iOS 11.2 Vulnerability that Allowed Unauthorized Access to HomeKit Devices

Posted on Wednesday, December 13, 2017 by AppleVis

Apple has today released iOS 11.2.1 to the public, bringing a fix for a zero-day security exploit in iOS 11.2 that allowed unauthorized access to HomeKit accessories.

This vulnerability was patched server-side last week by Apple, but today's release now fixes this on the operating system itself.

As iOS 11.2.1 appears to be mainly a security update, we do not expect this release to contain…

Posted on Saturday, December 2, 2017 by AppleVis

Apple has today released iOS 11.2, which brings a number of fixes; enhancements; and changes for blind and low vision users.

Yo, Human! Mac Scripting, ā€œHello Worldā€: Accessing Life with Adaptive Technology

Speaking Up with AppleScript

Once You gaze into the System, the System also gazes into You! :-)

Fair warning! Any programming and scripting adventures can at first, be; very frustrating, extremely rewarding, can sink you into the depths of a learning curve for a long period of time, expand one's thinking patterns far beyond normal, cause one to pull one's hair out, cause one to become much faster and productive on their computer, can at times force one to restart their…

Baby It’s Cold Outside—The Lennox iComfort Thermostat and App

Posted on Monday, November 13, 2017 by PaulMartz

My 86-year old dad has been living with me since August. At the breakfast table this morning, he politely requested that we set the thermostat a bit warmer at night. The cold season is upon us here in mid-northern latitudes, and his elderly body just can’t handle it. To be honest, his request was not all that polite. He’s a former truck driver, which influenced his choice of vocabulary. As a result, his exact request can’t be printed here.

While fiddling with the thermostat to…

Cutting Loose: Unleashing The Power Of My iPhone 8

Posted on Wednesday, November 8, 2017 by Morgan Watkins

Many years ago, my son's Boy Scout troop lost its collective mind. The boys decided it would be great fun to go rappelling. This involves stepping backwards off of a high cliff or tall building and then walking down the outside surface. Even though safety ropes are involved, I was concerned. Gravity is unrelenting.

Still, my son was really excited. I reluctantly tagged along with him to the base of the thirty-three-foot wooden tower. One of the other dads, trying to be thoughtful,…

A Message for the Blind

Are you sending a decent message to the blind community? Are you sending 'any' messages to the blind community? If you are a web or app developer, a blogger or a YouTuber, if you use Facebook or any messaging app or email, I am here to tell you that you 'are' sending a message with everything you create. The question one should ask is, "Am I sending an intentional message?" Those of us who use a screen reader or Braille display get the message literally loud…

iPhone X Review: There are Some Adjustments and Compromises, but I Can’t Imagine Going Back

Posted on Friday, November 3, 2017 by David Goodwin

This time last year, those potentially in the market for a new iPhone were probably caught up in the hand-wringing that followed Apple's decision to drop the headphone jack from the iPhone 7 and 7 Plus.

12 months on, and most of us would probably look back and wonder what all of the fuss was about.

Of course, this should come as no surprise, as Apple has…

Getting Words on the Touchscreen: Writing on iOS

Posted on Wednesday, October 25, 2017 by Lysette Chaproniere

Every writer knows the feeling: you’ve just sat down at the keyboard, ready to write your next masterpiece. Suddenly, your mind goes blank. What seemed like the perfect idea late last night now seems impossible to put into words. Or perhaps you have no ideas at all and you wonder how you’ve ever managed to write anything. Unfortunately, your iOS device can’t write your articles, essays, stories or blog posts for you, but combined with a…

Five Apple Innovations that Impacted Accessibility

Posted on Friday, October 20, 2017 by PaulMartz

If you’re like me, there’s no way you can resist reading an article with a title like 5 TECH STANDARDS APPLE MURDERED AND 5 MORE ON THE CHOPPING BLOCK.

I found the five murder victims quite noteworthy. Some seem obvious, like the demise of the floppy disk and CD-ROM. Back in the ā€˜90s, PC manufacturers were a lot like lemmings that would’ve followed each other over the floppy disk cliff were it not for Apple’s bold leadership…
