Apple Releases macOS High Sierra 10.13.2; With Some Improvements for VoiceOver and Braille Users

By AppleVis, 6 December, 2017

Member of the AppleVis Editorial Team

today has seen the release of macOS High Sierra 10.13.2.

According to Apple's release notes, this update includes the following:

  • Improves compatibility with certain third-party USB audio devices
  • Improves VoiceOver compatibility navigation when viewing PDF documents in Preview
  • Improves compatibility of Braille displays with Mail

There are also some additional security fixes in this release, which are detailed here by Apple.

We have only been able to carry out extremely limited testing of macOS High Sierra 10.13.2 prior to today's release, so it is possible that it includes additional fixes or changes for blind and low vision users which are not detailed in the release notes and which we are currently unaware of. If you encounter any changes, enhancements, fixes or regressions in your own use of this release, please let us know by adding a comment.

macOS 10.13.2 is available via the updates tab in the Mac App Store.

VO space didn't work

By themusicman08

Alot of us use VoiceOver and of course, I went and grabbed the update. Well, to my disappointment, VO-space doesn't work in some instances. What I mean is this. If I press vo-spacebar on any of my hard drive icons, VoiceOver says that they are opening but, they don't. I have to press command O to open them. When I called Apple's accessibility, one rep told me right away to reinstall the OS. Um? Why when it was a fresh install from the get go? I didn't do any other testing on the new OS. I rolled back to the previous operating system that I had installed. I used a time machine back up.

There are some improvements for navigating on pdf documents in Preview but they didn't fixed the long document and continues reading issues. Second issue is not a big problem but it's important, on the other hand, big files are problematic, I think they should fixe these bugs immediately.
They don't care about Mac OS as they do in İOS, at least this is my impression, I hope it's not true.

I, too, would love to see the long PDF issue fixed. I had a pdf book about 1000 pages long, but I can't read it with VoiceOver. Because Preview keep getting busy when I open the book.
