Apple Releases iOS 26 and iPadOS 26

By AppleVis, 15 September, 2025

Apple has today released iOS 26 and iPadOS 26 to the public, bringing several new features for VoiceOver and braille users; and many changes, including a visual redesign; improvements to Apple Intelligence; and new capabilities for Phone, Messages, and more. There are also additional iPad-specific features in iPadOS 26.

iOS 26 and iPadOS 26 introduce Liquid Glass, a new design language for the user interface. Apple says that "Liquid Glass makes interactions across iOS more delightful, refracts and reflects content in real time, and brings even more focus to what you’re viewing on your screen." Apple further adds that "App icons get a fresh new look with Liquid Glass, and there are more ways to customize them with updated light or dark appearances, new color-tinted icons, and a new clear look."

For blind and DeafBlind users, our experience has been that the Liquid Glass user interface does not have a significant impact on VoiceOver functionality. The only changes some of our team have observed are that tappable targets on toolbars feel a bit smaller, making location of UI elements by touch slightly more difficult. Also, the Search functionality has been relocated to the bottom of the screen, whereas in previous versions of iOS search options were at the top.

We were unfortunately not able to assess the impact of Liquid Glass on the low vision user experience. We recommend that low vision users try iOS 26 on a secondary device prior to installing it on a primary device. Also, the transparency-related settings in Settings> Accessibility> Display and Text Size may be of help. If you have low vision and have experience with the Liquid Glass interface, we would love to hear your opinions on its accessibility.

How to Update

iOS 26 and iPadOS 26 are available via Over-the-Air Update (Settings > General > Software Update), via Finder on a Mac with macOS Catalina or later, or via iTunes on a PC or Mac with macOS Mojave or earlier.

Before updating, we strongly recommend making a full and complete backup of your device (either locally or in iCloud, depending on personal preference). This will ensure that, in the unlikely event that something goes wrong during the update process, you will have a current backup on hand in case a device restore becomes necessary. Also, if using OTA update, we recommend plugging your device into a power source for the duration of the download/installation process, so as to prevent the unlikely event of your battery going dead during the update.

We look forward to hearing your thoughts about all things iOS 26 and iPadOS 26 in the comments below.

I updated my iPhone SE third generation first as it’s not my primary device. Then I updated my iPhone 15, which is my primary device. They seem to be stable enough to do that. I think this is very stable. This is probably the one of the most stable first releases I’ve seen. I think it looks pretty good so far. We got two new Indian English voices. We got almond and Tara. I think they’re in regular form there’s not an enhanced or premium for those places. I think they’re still pretty good though. Those are nice. I haven’t used them, but I just listen to their samples and they seem pretty good. So that’s all I know so far and if anything changes, obviously I will repost here. I am using my iPhone SE right now to post this comment. My iPhone SE is basically being used as my iPod. My iPhone 15 is my primary phone. I felt confident enough with the update to go ahead and do it on that device as well. I think it looks pretty good so far. But the thing is for my particular used case the things that are listed as bugs or things that I don’t use so I wouldn’t just tell anybody to go ahead and update. Updating as a purely personal decision everybody’s own individual case in different things that use their phones for still I totally understand why somebody may not want to update yet. This is only the second year that I’ve ever updated the first day. Normally I don’t. But after carefully reading through the summaries of the bugs and improvements for the Voice offer users, I thought that it was OK for me to go ahead and do it. Even voice control seems to be fine. I use both Accessibility features and conjunction with each other as I need voiceover for navigating screen and voice control so I have to give my hands as much to my CP.
